Ruda Śląska combines reminders of Upper Silesia’s industrial history with revitalized green spaces and a wide range of leisure activities. Highlights include the Ficinus workers’ settlement, the nearly 76-metre-high Wielki Piec and Aquadrom, with its water and sauna areas. This gives you a clear question to consider when planning your trip: should your stay focus mainly on industrial heritage, time outdoors or a visit to the water park?

Workers’ Settlements and Industrial Heritage

The Ficinus Colony is one of the oldest examples of workers’ settlement architecture in Upper Silesia. More than 90 percent of its residential buildings have been preserved. Its distinctive character comes from a historic pedestrian area, a museum exhibition on traditional Silesian cuisine and a gallery featuring people associated with Ruda Śląska. The colony brings together architectural history, regional food culture and local biographies.

The Carl-Emanuel Colony also tells the story of housing for workers: it comprises 15 workers’ houses along Wolności, Raciborska and Zabrzańska Streets. The Wielki Piec at the “Pokój” Steelworks offers a different highlight. It was built between 1966 and 1968, stands nearly 76 metres tall and was added to the register of historic monuments in 2012. Since 2020, it has also been part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH). Visitors interested in technical monuments will find another notable site at Stacja Biblioteka, located in a railway complex in Chebzie that was built between 1897 and 1899. Stacja Biblioteka is part of the Silesian Voivodeship Route of Technical Monuments.

City History and Discoveries

The Maksymilian Chrobok Municipal Museum hosts temporary exhibitions on ethnography, history and visual art. For a more interactive experience, the museum has developed RUDZKA mAPPKA: it guides users to Ruda Śląska’s main attractions and involves them in outdoor games. Another historical stop is the Parish of St. Joseph, which was elevated to the status of a diocesan shrine on 30 April 2010.

Nature also offers a small local curiosity: at the intersection of Wolności and Kościelna Streets in the Ruda district lies a boulder of coarse-grained granite, protected as a natural monument since 1960. An educational trail has been created in a five-hectare natural area between Bujoczka and Kościelna Streets. These discoveries offer a quieter focus than the city’s towering structures and industrial history.

Green Spaces, Water and Getting Here

The Trakt Rudzki links Wirek and Nowy Bytom through a network of revitalized green spaces and parks. Formerly degraded industrial areas have been transformed into public spaces, while micromobility options help people get around between districts. The planned Trakt Rudzki is intended for walking, cycling and running. Some sections are also expected to be suitable for roller-skating.

Aquadrom adds leisure, sport and saunas to your city sightseeing. Its attractions include seven winding slides, a wild-water channel, an artificial wave and several whirlpools. There is also a children’s area, four different saunas and a seven-metre-high diving tube. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether industrial heritage, walks and green spaces or a visit to Aquadrom should be the main focus of your trip.

The transport connections mentioned below can also help you plan your journey: Ruda and Chebzie are the two railway stations in Ruda Śląska on the Wrocław–Kraków line. Aquadrom is five minutes from the A4 motorway and 15 minutes from the Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa. You can explore the destination itself further at Ruda Śląska.
