Fossils and former quarries

GEOsfera lies in the hollow of the former Sadowa Góra Triassic limestone quarry. Fossils have been preserved in its exposed rock layers: remains of crinoids, molluscs, cephalopods and fish, as well as a nothosaur. For families, this offers a tangible reason to reflect together on the world of life revealed by such finds. You can reach GEOsfera on PKM Jaworzno city bus route 304, getting off at the “GEOsfera” stop.

The Arboretum Park Gródek also bears the imprint of its former use: its 58.54 hectares encompass former dolomite quarries belonging to the former Szczakowa cement works. The transformation from quarry land into a varied landscape makes Gródek a distinctive nature destination in Jaworzno.

Landscapes with water and protected areas

At the arboretum, you will find warmth-loving dry grasslands and meadows, as well as rocky areas, wetlands and bodies of water. Pine forests and oak-hornbeam forests add to this variety. A distinctive winding path runs through the Wydra Reservoir, offering a view of the surroundings from the water. Those who enjoy taking in different kinds of landscapes will find more than just a single backdrop here.

Zalew Sosina is in Pieczyska, in the eastern part of Jaworzno. It has a supervised bathing area and offers pedal boat and kayak rentals. This makes it easy to focus an outing on the water, while Gródek offers different landscapes. Another natural attraction is the Dolina Żabnika nature reserve: it covers 42 hectares and has been protected since June 1996. You can reach it on foot or by bicycle via the green hiking trail. The Dobra-Wilkoszyn protected landscape area was established to protect rare plants and sulphur springs.

City history and distinctive landmarks

The Muzeum Miasta Jaworzna collects and displays objects of material culture and works of art directly connected with Jaworzno and its region. The collection began with old mining maps and plans acquired from mines. They give a visit to the museum a tangible connection to the city’s mining history.

The Collegiate Church also offers a window onto Jaworzno’s long history: the parish dates back more than 700 years, and the church in Jaworzno was elevated to collegiate status in 1997. A very different landmark is the Market Square, notable for its unusual, irregular triangular shape. If you want to combine nature outings with culture and city history, you can include these different themes when choosing your excursions.

Choose a route and focus for your outing

Two longer routes offer a choice of clearly different markings and distances. The black-marked cycling loop around Jaworzno is 48.5 kilometres long. The red hiking trail is a 58.4-kilometre circular route; it starts and ends at Jaworzno Szczakowa PKP railway station. Góra Przygoń can also be a highlight of an outing: at almost 355 metres above sea level, it is Jaworzno’s highest point and offers a view across the entire city.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Jaworzno, you can consider which experiences you want to make the focus of your stay: water at Zalew Sosina, nature and landscapes at Gródek, geological history at GEOsfera, or culture and city history.
