Bieruń offers a variety of reasons to visit: the city’s history is reflected in information boards, monuments and the layout of the market square; customs and sacred traditions provide further points of interest. There is also the “Łysina” bathing beach and preserved old channels of the Vistula. You can shape your stay around what interests you most—from historic sites to water and landscape.

Market Square, Information Boards and Monuments

The Bieruński Szlak Historyczny (Bieruń Historical Trail) consists of 16 information boards: eight each in the Nowy Bieruń and Bieruń Stary sections. The boards are located in easily accessible places that are important to Bieruń’s history.

A fountain in Bieruń’s market square features sculptures of three folkloric Utopiec figures: the Old Utopiec, the Young Utopiec and a duck. The almost square market square in Bieruń Stary has the typical layout of a medieval town founded anew. Streets branch off at right angles from its corners. The town’s history can therefore be read not only in individual monuments, but also in its urban layout.

Kopiec is considered the oldest monument in Bieruń. Grobel is considered a monument to earthworks and the second-oldest historical monument in the Bieruń area, after Kopiec. The descriptions emphasise different aspects: Kopiec is noted for its status as the oldest monument, while Grobel is also recognised for the significance of its earthworks and its second-place ranking.

Sacred Traditions and Places of Remembrance

The Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle has a movable Christmas nativity scene. It operates from 25 December until the indulgence feast of Saint Valentine on 14 February. Check the current arrangements before visiting. This clearly defined period is a useful reference if you are planning your trip around the nativity scene.

The Sanctuary of Saint Valentine, known to Bieruń’s residents as “Walencinek”, is the only wooden church in the Bieruń-Lędziny County. It is associated with a centuries-old tradition of indulgence celebrations. On 14 February, pilgrims come to Bieruń for the indulgence feast of Saint Valentine. Thus, alongside the seasonal nativity scene, a fixed date also shapes the town’s sacred traditions.

Another place of remembrance is the Jewish cemetery in Bieruń, next to the former synagogue building. It is tangible, visible evidence of the Jewish presence in the town and its surroundings. Together with the market square, monuments and sacred traditions, it forms a multifaceted picture of local history.

Water, Landscape and Travel Dates

The “Łysina” bathing beach is open annually during the summer holidays. Check the current local information before your trip. Old channels of the Vistula have been preserved in Czarnuchowice, which has been part of the city of Bieruń since 1991. These two water-related attractions are distinct: Łysina is a seasonal bathing beach, while the old channels are part of the city’s landscape.

In the surrounding area, a cycle path runs through Ściernie along the route of a former narrow-gauge railway. The former narrow-gauge railway was built in 1916 from Bieruń’s Lignoza plant to the station in Nowy Bieruń and dismantled in 1975. Ściernie is considered Bieruń’s oldest district.

The different opening periods are useful for planning: Łysina is open during the summer holidays, and the nativity scene in the Church of Saint Bartholomew operates from 25 December to 14 February. Historic sites and the landscape around Czarnuchowice are not tied to these specific periods.
