Castle and Urban History

The castle is a notable starting point for exploring Będzin’s history. The town was granted municipal rights in the 14th century. In the 1360s, the town walls were built and connected to the ring walls of the royal castle, which had been built earlier. The area enclosed by the town walls was about 7 ha; the fortification line was about 1,000 m long. Both figures give an impression of the fortified town at the time, but should not be used to infer present-day routes or distances.

The castle remained a ruin until the end of the Second World War and was rebuilt in 1952. Since 1956, the Muzeum Zagłębia has been housed inside it, with an extensive collection of historic weapons. The castle tower offers panoramic views of Zagłębie. This brings together architectural history, a museum visit and a view across the region in a single place, appealing to both history enthusiasts and curious explorers.

Palace, Churches and Jewish Heritage

The Pałac Mieroszewskich represents a different architectural era. It was built between 1702 and 1714 in the Baroque-Classical style and has been home to the Muzeum Zagłębia since 1982. In the park to the west of the palace are two stone sculptures of Bacchus and a Bacchante. They were probably created by Jerzy Leonard Weber in 1718. The date and attribution are explicitly considered probable, not certain.

Sacred buildings also tell of the town’s long history. The Church of the Holy Trinity was built entirely of masonry around 1364. The Church of St. Dorothy stands on Góra św. Doroty in Będzin, at an elevation of 382 m, and was built in 1635. Jewish history can be discovered at other sites: the Jewish cemetery on Podzamcze, which is still in existence, was established after the outbreak of the cholera epidemic in 1831. It is wooded and lies on a hillside. The Dom Modlitwy Mizrachi preserves wall paintings featuring Jewish iconography, considered the richest in the Silesian Voivodeship.

A church in Będzin houses Poland’s first Sanctuary of Golgotha of the East. It includes an Izba Pamięci with materials commemorating those who were deported. Since 2000, the upper church of the sanctuary has hosted the Gala Concert of the International Festival of Christmas and Shepherds’ Songs of Ks. Kazimierz Szwarlik. The Podziemia Będzińskie are an unfinished air-raid shelter, intended for the German military and administrative units stationed in Będzin and later also for the German civilian population. These places represent different, sometimes sombre, aspects of the town’s history.

Trails and Cultural Experiences

Those who would also like to explore Będzin on foot will find two different trail connections: the Szlak Świerklaniecki runs for 3.3 km through the town. The green-marked Szlak 25-lecia PTTK also passes through Będzin. The Szlak Husarii Polskiej begins near Będzin Miasto railway station. Będzin may therefore be particularly appealing when choosing a holiday apartment if you would like to combine urban history with a stay that also includes walking trails.

For families interested in culture, the Teatr Dzieci Zagłębia is a specific point of interest: it is a children’s theatre with an official programme. So, alongside historic buildings, theatre is another distinct option.
