Waterscape and rural character
Wierzchucino has preserved its traditional multi-street settlement layout, typical of historic rural settlements. The village’s structure contrasts with its waterside location: the Bychowska Struga and Lake Żarnowieckie shape the geographical setting, while the street layout recalls the history of rural settlement. About 3 km east of Wierzchucino lies the Długosz Królewski nature reserve, in the buffer zone of the Coastal Landscape Park. Buildings and history in the village
The village’s varied historical traces include religious buildings, a manor house, and surviving farm buildings. The parish church in Wierzchucino was consecrated on 6 September 1931. There is also a former Neo-Gothic Evangelical church in the village, dating from 1882, with a historic cemetery. The two buildings represent different chapters in local history; the former Evangelical use is part of the recorded identity of this building.
A manor house from the early 20th century is surrounded by a park. Buildings from a former folwark (manor farm) have also survived. The remains of a German centre for preparing for the Olympic Games in the 1930s add another unusual aspect to the history of the village. A historic watermill also stands on the Bychowska Struga. A visit to Wierzchucino can therefore explore several distinct themes: religious architecture, manor history, former agricultural use, and a building by the water.
Excursions and places of remembrance
About 1 km west of Wierzchucino’s present-day built-up area, directly beside Voivodeship Road 213 towards Choczewo, is a restored Evangelical cemetery. A monument there commemorates local residents who fell in the First World War. It bears the names of 44 residents of Wierzchucino and the surrounding area who fell between 1914 and 1918. This place of remembrance has a different focus from the buildings in the village: it commemorates people from Wierzchucino and its surroundings.
The Piaśnica also offers a distinct excursion idea. Near Wierzchucino, the river flows out of Lake Żarnowieckie between Żarnowiec and Wierzchucino. This outflow is a popular starting point for kayaking trips that end at a beach in the vicinity of Dębem, as the Piaśnica flows directly into the Baltic Sea.
