Ryjewo: Churches, Forest Paths and Cycling Routes

Ryjewo combines church and local history with a forest path by the water and several cycling routes that start in or pass through the village. This gives you the opportunity to choose different focuses for your trip: architectural history, nature along the Ryjewo Path, or a longer tour through the municipality and surrounding area. The view from the hill by the Church of the Holy Family across the Vistula Valley, the surrounding forests and Gniew Castle is another of the village’s special highlights.

Churches and Local History
The neo-Gothic Church of the Holy Family was built in 1908–1909. It was declared a sanctuary in 1934 and established as a sanctuary again in 1987. Together with its cemetery, rectory and adjacent green space, the church is listed in the heritage register of the Pomeranian Voivodeship; the entry is numbered 333/94 and dated 11 February 1994. Every year, an indulgence celebration in honour of the Holy Family takes place there on the first Sunday after 15 August. Pilgrims from surrounding villages also attend.
Another landmark in the village’s history is the “Bł. Michała Kozala” church. It was built in 1895 for the local Protestant community and rebuilt in 1988–1991. Today it serves Catholics and the “bł. Michała Kozala” parish. This church is also listed in the heritage register of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, under number 131/89. Together, the two churches reflect different periods in the village’s history, while their construction and use histories remain distinct.
The historic character of Ryjewo also includes the former Protestant cemetery on ul. Grunwaldzka, behind building No. 100. Its western section was established around the middle of the 19th century, while the eastern section dates from around 1895. The cemetery has been renovated in recent years and is regularly maintained. The different dates when the two sections were established make it a distinct point of interest for anyone interested in the village’s history.
Forest, Water and Views
The Ryjewo Path is beside a small lake at the village entrance from the direction of Sztum. It runs through the forest along a stream that flows into the lake. Several bridges cross the stream, and seating provides places to stop and rest. Almost every species of coniferous and deciduous tree found in Poland grows along the path, including oaks designated as natural monuments. Water, forest and the variety of trees together shape the character of the path. Ryjewo on Foot and by Bike
There are also different options for longer trips. The 118.1 km Kopernikowski Trail passes through Ryjewo between Biała Góra and Kwidzyn. The Green Cycling Route in the Gmina Ryjewo is 44 km long; the listed route starts and ends in Ryjewo. There is also a 23 km circular route that likewise starts in Ryjewo and returns there.
The circular route passes through Jałowiec, Mątowskie Pastwiska and Benowo, as well as the Benowo forester’s lodge, the Swedish earthworks, the Sarnowo forester’s lodge and Borowiec. Its course is therefore quite different from the Green Cycling Route and the Kopernikowski Trail, which connects two other places. When choosing a route, consider both its length and type: a loop that starts and ends in Ryjewo, or a route that passes through the village or connects it with other places.
