Hiking and cycling trails with varied routes
The red-marked, 24-kilometre Szlak Powstania Styczniowego (January Uprising Trail) starts and ends in Siemiatycze. It runs around the town; the start and finish are at the former synagogue on Ulica Zaszkolna, now home to the Miejski Ośrodek Kultury museum and gallery. The yellow-marked Szlak Kupiecki (Merchant Trail) is a 40-kilometre hiking trail. It also starts in Siemiatycze and passes through the municipality of Mielnik. The green-marked Szlak Nadbużańskich Grodzisk (Bug Valley Fortified Settlements Trail) is 41 kilometres long. It starts at Góra Zamkowa in Drohiczyn and runs through villages in the municipalities of Drohiczyn and Siemiatycze as far as Bużyski. The route is intended for independent travellers and organised groups interested in geomorphology, archaeology, hiking and cycling. For a cycling trip, there is also the green-marked Czeremcha–Mielnik–Siemiatycze trail: 59 kilometres long, it runs from Czeremcha via Mielnik to Siemiatycze. The “Bug Rajem dla Turysty” project includes a total of 106 kilometres of cycling trails along the Bug; a 4.3-kilometre section passes through the municipality of Siemiatycze.
For a drive, the Samochodowy Szlak Południowego Podlasia (Southern Podlachia Car Trail) runs from Drohiczyn via Mielnik and Święta Góra Grabarka to Topiło. It connects scenic stretches of Southern Podlachia. These different routes offer practical starting points for planning your holiday: hiking, cycling and a driving route complement the options among forests and waterways.
Culture, history and religious sites
In Siemiatycze, the former Jewish synagogue is a prominent cultural venue. Built in 1797 in the classical style, it is now one of the buildings belonging to the Siemiatycze Cultural Centre. Its gallery has four exhibition rooms featuring permanent and temporary exhibitions. The art forms on display include painting, graphic art, sculpture, photography and folk art. The venue thus brings together a historic building and a diverse exhibition programme.
The Orthodox Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Siemiatycze is also a classical-style religious building, built in the 19th century on a plinth with stone foundations. Its interior walls are adorned with frescoes inspired by Byzantine painting; the furnishings also include an icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. Święta Góra Grabarka is considered the most important religious pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians in Poland. Every year on 19 August, the faithful make a pilgrimage there for the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Spasa. Grabarka is also a stop on the Samochodowy Szlak Południowego Podlasia. In Drohiczyn, Góra Zamkowa offers a viewpoint over the Bug Valley. Archaeological work there uncovered the ground plan of the castle’s stone foundations. The Nadbużańskie Centrum Turystyki Kajakowej features museum collections on kayaking, old and modern kayaks, multimedia information and memorabilia related to kayaking.
In Mielnik, chalk mining dates back to the 16th century; the open-pit mine is considered the only active quarry of its kind in Poland. Individual visitors can view the site from the observation point on Ulica Duboisa if access is not possible or they do not have permission to enter. This makes it possible to get an overview of the site even when entering the grounds is not possible.
