Węgrów County: Liwiec, Church Art and Regional History
Accommodation in Węgrów County
In Węgrów County, the Liwiec is intertwined with a rich cultural history. Węgrów lies in the river valley that separates the historic regions of Masovia and Podlasie. Węgrów is considered the heart of the Liwiec Valley. Churches and historic buildings tell the story of different eras here.
Church Art and History in Węgrów
One focal point of the region’s cultural history is the collegiate church, which was elevated to the status of a minor basilica on 4 April 1997. The Minor Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is considered the oldest building in Węgrów. Its sacristy houses the Twardowski Mirror, which dates from the second half of the 16th century.
The wall paintings by Michał Anioł Palloni offer another distinctive thread through the history of the churches. Between 1706 and 1709, he created nine large wall paintings in Węgrów’s parish church; he painted nine more frescoes in the Poreformati Church. The Poreformati complex consists of a monastery and the Church of Saints Peter of Alcantara and Anthony of Padua. Visitors with a particular interest in sacred art will find several clearly distinct places to explore and can use them as themes when planning their trip.
The Lutheran wooden church in the Protestant cemetery represents a different architectural style. Built of larch wood in 1679, it is considered the oldest wooden architectural monument in the area. The Evangelical Church in Węgrów also preserves the only original instrument by M. R. Müller in central Poland. Together, these buildings tell the story of different religious and craft traditions. The bell-founding tradition in Podlasie dates back to the mid-19th century, when the first bell foundry was established in Węgrów.
Secular architecture includes the Gdański House, a Baroque building from the mid-18th century on the north side of the market square. It complements the religious buildings with a structure that has its own place in the townscape. If you’re mainly interested in discovering historic buildings, painting and regional traditions on your trip, you can give these themes greater weight when choosing a holiday apartment or house in Węgrów County.

Families travelling with children may wish to consider the playgrounds and designated sports facilities in particular; the cycle paths also provide another option for active recreation.

Choose your accommodation according to which of these is more important for your trip; there’s no need to combine both kinds of experience into a single itinerary.
