Zaborów lies on the southern edge of the Kampinos Forest. Two historic highlights give the place its distinctive character: the present-day church, with its long building history, and the palace-and-park complex, featuring an eclectic palace built between 1901 and 1903. The complex also lies along two routes. Zaborów therefore offers something for a range of interests: the development of the parish and its churches, as well as planning one of the routes associated with the palace-and-park complex.

The Church and Its Changing Building History

The parish in Zaborów was established in 1465; the first wooden church dates from that time. In 1661, Zofia Kryska z Lubieńskich, the Crown Chancellor, endowed another wooden church. It burned down in 1700. Another church was built in the same year, then demolished towards the end of the 18th century. The present-day church is therefore part of a local history that includes several earlier church buildings.

The present-day church was built in 1791 to a design by Hilary Szpilowski and funded by Karolina and Placyd Izbińscy. Renovations followed in 1839 and 1905; it was finally consecrated in 1909. These dates illuminate different stages in its history: the construction of the present building, later renovations and its consecration.

The history of the place also has a biographical connection: Mother Teresa prayed in the church in 1983 and founded a novitiate for her religious order in Zaborów. This means the church’s significance extends beyond construction dates and benefactors into more recent history. Those interested in religious and historical connections will find several distinct points of interest here, which need not be reduced to a single event.

Palace Architecture and Route Planning

The eclectic palace in the palace-and-park complex was built between 1901 and 1903 to a design by Franciszek Lilpop and Karol Jankowski. Eclecticism generally refers to architecture that draws on different styles. The style designation offers a perspective on the palace, while the church’s history reaches back from earlier wooden churches to the building constructed in 1791. Both topics offer different perspectives on the history of Zaborów.

The palace-and-park complex lies along the Dąbrowa Leśna–Kampinos route and the Kampinoski Szlak Rowerowy. The Dąbrowa Leśna–Kampinos route is listed as 48.9 kilometres and 13 hours. The Kampinoski Szlak Rowerowy runs between Laski, polana Opaleń and Tułowice and is listed as 74.8 kilometres long. For the first route, both distance and duration are provided; for the cycling route, its length and the places along its course are given. These details answer different planning questions. Check current route conditions before setting out.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Zaborów, you can first consider which focus you want to shape your stay: the church and architectural history, or the routes associated with the palace-and-park complex. This lets you choose where to stay based on the themes you want to explore locally, while planning your routes separately.
