City history at the market square and in the churches
Przasnysz received its town charter in 1427. A prominent landmark in the city’s history is the town hall, a Neoclassical building erected in the centre of the market square at the end of the 18th century. Its restoration was completed in 2012. Its central location in the square makes the town hall a good starting point if you would like to explore the city’s historic layout.
Another highlight is the parish church of the Assumption of Mary, a late Gothic building dating from 1474 to 1485. The story of Saint Stanislaus Kostka is linked to the church: he was baptised there in 1550 in what is known as the Kostka Chapel. His parents and brothers are buried in the chapel. The church also has a completely freestanding Gothic masonry bell tower. It dates from the 15th century and was raised around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The church, chapel and tower thus offer several historical points of interest within a single religious complex.
Green space on the Węgierka
If you would like to include a park visit alongside the city’s history, Przasnysz City Park offers a different perspective on the town. The park was established in the first half of the 19th century and includes an island in the Węgierka. New walking paths made of natural stone gravel have been laid in Tadeusz Kościuszko City Park. Five oak trees there are around 300 years old and are protected as natural monuments. The water, paths and old trees each give the park a distinctive character: its setting by the river, opportunities for walking and a remarkable collection of trees.
Exhibitions and activity
The permanent multimedia exhibition “Złoty wiek Przasnysza” (“The Golden Age of Przasnysz”) can be visited at the Historical Museum. It is aimed mainly at children and gives families a specific cultural focus for their stay. The sports and leisure centre complements this offering with a fitness room and aerobics rooms equipped with training equipment. An infrared sauna is also available. If you do not want to focus your trip solely on historic buildings, you can take these different interests into account when planning, without combining them into a single outing.
A look at railway history
Transport history is also part of Przasnysz’s story. The Mławska Kolej Dojazdowa narrow-gauge railway was built during the First World War and initially linked Mława with Przasnysz. The city’s railway heritage complex includes a wooden station building dating from around 1925 and a steel bridge over the Węgierka; both are listed in the heritage register. These landmarks offer a distinct historical perspective alongside the town hall, churches and park. The station building and bridge are described as components of the heritage complex.
