Raszyn: History, Nature and Cycling Route

Raszyn invites visitors to connect the history of a specific building with art, sacred architecture and nature in the surrounding municipality. The Austeria, the parish church and the Raszyn Redoubt offer different ways to explore the past; Falenty and a cycling route complement this cultural perspective with landscape and activity. Austeria: Building History, Battle and Art

The history of the Austeria building dates back to the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The restored building is one of the remains of Raszyn's historic urban layout in the town centre. This means the Austeria can be viewed both as an individual historic building and in the context of the former settlement layout.

During the Battle of Raszyn in 1809, Prince Józef Poniatowski had his headquarters in the Austeria. The building's history also has an artistic dimension: visitors can see copies of paintings depicting the Battle of Raszyn by January Suchodolski and Wojciech Kossak, as well as vedute by Canaletto. The subjects of the images differ: the painting copies relate to the battle, while vedute show views of places. Those interested both in historical events and their depiction in art can thus gain two different perspectives on the place.

Architecture and Remembrance

A different historical period takes centre stage at the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Stephen and St. Anne. It is a Baroque-classical church and a valuable architectural monument dating from the 17th century. By comparison, the history of the Austeria dates back to the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries: the two buildings offer different ways of exploring Raszyn's history through time.

The Raszyn Redoubt commemorates the Battle of Raszyn of 1809 and those who fell in the First World War. It thus brings together two commemorative themes from different eras. Together with the Austeria, which is associated with the 1809 battle, it offers a particular focus for travellers interested in historical events and commemorative culture.

Nature and Activity in the Surrounding Municipality

There are 11 ponds in Falenty, in the municipality surrounding Raszyn. The extensive area provides a habitat for around 130 bird species. The Stawy Raszyńskie Nature Reserve, together with its buffer zone, covers just under 350 hectares. Nature enthusiasts will find a different focus here than at the architectural and memorial sites: the ponds, birdlife and protected area shape the natural character of the surroundings.

Cycling is another of the activities described. A cycling route more than 7.1 kilometres long runs from the Warsaw boundary along Aleja Krakowska, through Raszyński Park and onwards via Stadionowa, Raszyńska, Warszawska and Górna streets. The route passes through a large part of the municipality. The municipality reported that it was completed in June 2022. This makes it possible to weigh up a culturally focused stay against a greater focus on nature or cycling when planning, without reducing these interests to the same way of exploring.
