The Wisła Valley and its landscapes

Lipski County stretches across the Radom Hills, the Opatów Plateau and the Kozienice Basin. A high escarpment separates it from the Lublin Upland, with the Wisła Valley running between them. Within the county, the Wisła Valley lies in the municipalities of Chotcza and Solec; there, a broad riverbed, numerous islands and sandbanks shape the landscape. The Solec nad Wisłą Protected Landscape Area was established on 19 April 2002 by an ordinance of the Masovian Voivode.

Birdlife also makes the valley a special focus for nature enthusiasts: More than 320 bird species have been recorded throughout the Wisła Valley. Around Chotcza and Solec, about 40 species of water and wetland birds breed. The Wisła lowlands in Lipski County are designated as Natura 2000 sites of international importance for biodiversity conservation. Near Sadkowice, close to Solec nad Wisłą, a reserve protects steppe vegetation—a different landscape feature from the damp riverbanks.

Hiking and cycling trails of varying lengths

A signposted green hiking trail follows the Krępianka through fields and forest, connecting Lipsko with Solec nad Wisłą. The route is 11 km long. For those considering a considerably longer route, there is the red Rzeczniów–Sienno hiking trail: It is 39 km long and passes through Kochanówka, Wólka Modrzejowa, Grabowiec, Podkońce, Płósy and Rzechów before returning to Rzeczniów. The stated lengths can help you choose between the two routes based on how far you wish to hike.

Cycling routes also run through Lipski County, with a total length of 415.6 km; 208.8 km of these lie within the county’s administrative boundaries. The “Szlak Żółwia i dinozaura” hiking and cycling trail also passes through the county. These different types of routes offer options for hiking and cycling trips without requiring you to settle on just one kind of trail. Lipski County lies between Kazimierz Dolny, Janowiec and Bałtów and is described as a starting point for hiking and cycling tours.

Rivers, fishing opportunities and protected nature

The Iłżanka, Krępianka, Wisła and Kamienna rivers, as well as standing waters in Lipski County, offer fishing opportunities. Alongside the hiking and cycling trails, bodies of water are another travel theme to consider. If you are particularly interested in river landscapes and birdwatching, the Wisła Valley offers different natural features from the reserve near Sadkowice, where steppe vegetation is protected.

Cultural history in Solec nad Wisłą and Sienno

Solec nad Wisłą is home to medieval castle ruins dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. They are the remains of a border fortress built by King Casimir the Great; surviving features include sections of walls and foundations, as well as traces of a cylindrical tower. Solec nad Wisłą is also home to a 17th-century Reformed Franciscan monastery complex. St. Barbara’s Church dates from the 16th century and is considered one of the oldest wooden monuments in Masovia.

In Sienno, St. Zygmunt’s Church dates from the 15th century. A foundation plaque from 1442 is set into its wall. The different dates—from the medieval church building to the plaque—give the place a specific historical connection. The village museum in Lipa Miklas is also among the listed attractions of Lipski County. In the municipality of Ciepielów, a synagogue is listed as a notable part of the county’s cultural heritage.

Lipsko as a point of reference

Lipsko is the administrative centre of Lipski County. The town lies in the Krępianka Valley at the intersection of National Road 79 between Warsaw and Sandomierz and Voivodeship Road 747 between Iłża and Solec nad Wisłą. The Lipskie Centrum Kultury is a municipal cultural institution serving the town and municipality of Lipsko. Its events include concerts, festivals, competitions, exhibitions and author meetings.
