Half-timbered Church and Architectural Design

The church in Kęszyca is a half-timbered building dating from 1728, designed as a hall church. Its eastern end has a three-sided closure. A tower is attached to the western side, crowned by a tall, pointed spire. The building thus brings together distinct architectural features: its construction, floor plan and tower design. A stone wall surrounds the church grounds, enclosing the area around the church. Those interested in historical architectural styles will find several specific details here that can be distinguished from one another: the half-timbering, the hall plan, the closed eastern end and the tower on the western side.

Historical Traces in the Surrounding Area

The area around Kęszyca also has cultural and historical points of interest. North of the village, a settlement of the Lusatian culture with a cremation burial ground was discovered. West of Lake Stoki, clear traces of a fortified settlement remain; it measures 25 metres in diameter and is 6 metres high. The area around Kęszyca also contains elements of the MRU defensive belt, including so-called “dragon’s teeth,” combat bunkers and underground passages. The historical themes therefore extend beyond the church: the settlement, fortified site and defensive structures complement the village’s architectural history.

Two Routes of Different Lengths

The red route is 35 kilometres long and passes through Zarzyń, Kęszyca, Międzyrzecz, Bobowicko, Kuligowo and Stołuń. The blue route is 75 kilometres long and passes through Międzyrzecz, Jez. Głębokie, Gorzyca, Pieski, Kęszyca, Nietoperek, Skoki, Janowo, Policko, Kuligowo and Kalsko. Both routes therefore pass through Kęszyca. Their lengths make for a simple comparison when planning: the blue route is 40 kilometres longer than the red one, and the listed sequences of places also differ. Both are included in a PTTK route list. Check the local route markers before setting out.

Natural Landscape and the Wider Międzyrzecki Destination

Kęszyca lies within the Uroczyska Międzyrzeckiego Rejonu Umocnionego landscape and nature complex, established on 30 September 1997. This designated area adds a landscape perspective to the architectural history and historical traces.

Within the wider Międzyrzecki destination, the Muzeum Ziemi Międzyrzeckiej im. Alfa Kowalskiego offers its own cultural and historical focus. Its complex includes a castle dating from the 14th to the 16th century, the only royal Piast castle in the Lubusz Voivodeship. The museum collection comprises 220 objects, including coffin portraits, inscription plaques and coats-of-arms plaques.

The Pszczewski Landscape Park is also part of the wider Międzyrzecki destination. The park extends across the municipalities of Międzyrzecz, Przytoczna, Pszczew and Trzciel. Its forests have numerous cycling and walking trails; its clean waters are suitable for recreation and water sports, and kayaking trips are organized on the Obra. These regional attractions offer a different focus from the church and the two routes in Kęszyca.
