Czworobok and its distinctive design

Czworobok is a late Baroque building with a square floor plan and a large inner courtyard. Two gates stand on an east–west axis. The floor plan, courtyard and alignment of the gates thus emerge as different aspects of the same building. Rather than simply viewing it as an example of an architectural style, you can look at specific architectural features: the square layout, spacious inner courtyard and orientation of the two gates.

You can visit Czworobok along the Three Cultures Trail. The route can begin at the parish church of St Louis and the Pauline monastery. The building is therefore also part of a cultural history walk: you can appreciate it as an architectural attraction in its own right or see it in the context of the cultural trail as you follow the route.

A smaller but striking detail is the sundial on the wall of a tenement building in the market square. It is one of Włodawa’s landmarks. In contrast to the large Czworobok complex, it draws attention to a single design feature in the townscape.

A walk focused on history

The Museum – Synagogue Complex in Włodawa offers a 1.5-hour educational tour for groups of up to 30 people. Its theme is “In the Footsteps of the Włodawa Ghetto and the Last Journey of the Jews of Włodawa to Sobibór.” This gives you the option of including a historical focus in your trip plans. Cultural and landscape themes in the wider Włodawa destination

The wider Włodawa destination offers another perspective on sacred architecture and museum work. The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built as a Greek Catholic church in 1840–1842 and has been Orthodox since 1875; the Three Cultures Trail leads to it. The Museum–Synagogue Complex in Włodawa presents permanent and temporary exhibitions in its historic buildings. The Festival of Three Cultures was established in 1995. Its programme includes workshops, meetings with authors, film screenings, exhibitions, theatre performances and concerts. The annual festival is organised through close cooperation between the museum and the Roman Catholic and Orthodox communities.

Nature and outdoor activities are also part of the wider Włodawa destination. Włodawa borders the Bug River directly. The Nadbużańska Promenade runs along the Włodawka River and is suitable for walks. At a kayak landing, paddlers can come ashore on the Włodawka, visit the town and then continue along the Bug. Rare species such as black storks, European pond turtles, lynxes and wolves can be found in Sobibór Landscape Park. These themes complement the cultural offerings with walks, paddling and nature watching in the wider region.
