Łęczna combines a striking location between two rivers with an Old Town whose unusual layout includes three market squares. The older part lies on a high terrace between the Wieprz and Świnka rivers. The municipality also has historic religious buildings, traces of its fairs and a landscape park. If you would like to combine nature and urban history during your stay, Łęczna offers a range of ways to do so.

Old Town and historic buildings

The Great Synagogue was built in the mid-17th century. After being largely destroyed during and after the war, it was rebuilt between 1953 and 1964. Its interior is currently not open to visitors. The Small Synagogue was built from stone and brick in the early 19th century; a stone basin for ritual handwashing has been preserved there. The two buildings offer insight into the city’s architectural history, though they differ in their dates of construction and surviving architectural details.

The Church of St Mary Magdalene is also part of Łęczna’s older architecture: it was built between 1618 and 1631 in the late Renaissance style. The town hall is a Neoclassical brick building from the late 19th century, with a four-column portico. Another historic feature is the Mansjonaria, a late Baroque brick building endowed by Adam Noskowski around 1639. Together with the three market squares, these buildings make the Old Town a destination for travellers interested in different periods and architectural styles.

The Domy zajezdne at 26 and 37 ul. 3 Maja and 18 and 26 pl. Kanałowy bear witness to the era of the fairs. They are surviving examples of 19th-century architecture from the heyday of fairs in Łęczna. A former parish residence is a wooden building with Swiss-style decoration, dating to around 1858. These examples add buildings beyond religious architecture to the picture of the city.

River scenery and parks

Twenty percent of the Łęczna municipality lies within the Nadwieprzański Landscape Park. The protected Łęczyński Gorge section of the Wieprz valley is also located in the municipality’s northwestern part. This offers a different perspective for planning your holiday than the Old Town: here, the Wieprz landscape takes centre stage, while the historic buildings shape the urban side of your stay.

The Podzamcze park and manor complex sits on a hill where the Świnka meets the Wieprz. It covers about 8 hectares and contains nearly 2,000 trees. A viewing tower on the grounds is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is free to visit. A common ash tree in Łęczna is also protected as a natural monument. The tree has stood at ul. Marszałka Piłsudskiego since around 1780; its trunk circumference, measured at a height of 130 centimetres, is 470 centimetres.

A base for trips to the lake district

Łęczna is considered a good base for exploring the entire Łęczyńsko-Włodawskie Lake District. This wider region includes 68 lakes, each covering more than one hectare, with a combined area of 2,726 hectares. If you would like to focus your trip more on the lake district, you could consider Łęczna as a base; if you are mainly interested in the Old Town and its historic buildings, you will find them in the city itself. The brine graduation tower at the Ośrodek Rewalidacyjno-Wychowawczy is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The grounds also feature sensory gardens, two sensory paths and a playground for younger visitors.

For rail travel, the nearest station on the Lublin–Chełm line is in Minkowice. When choosing a holiday apartment, you may therefore want to consider whether the historic city of Łęczna or the wider lake district is more important to you during your stay.
