Pilgrimage and Local History
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Kodeń has drawn pilgrims from all over Poland for centuries. The annual indulgence celebration begins on 14 August and reaches its peak on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary; thousands of pilgrims take part. If you want this event to determine your travel dates, the feast day offers a clear planning anchor. Organised groups visiting the sanctuary should register at the monastery gate. Confirm current arrangements for groups directly with the sanctuary.
The town’s architectural history also makes Kodeń interesting: the Parish Church of St Anne was built in 1629–1635 in the Late Renaissance style. Together with the Orthodox church, it recalls the area’s multicultural history. The historic Uniate Gate is on ul. Sławatycka. The Cemetery Chapel of St Lawrence was built in 1683–1685 through the efforts of Kazimierz Władysław Sapieha.
The foundations, 17th-century earthworks and a 16th–17th-century arsenal are all that remain of Kodeń’s Sapieha Castle. The stations of the Way of the Cross at Kalwaria Kodeńska follow renovated ramparts surrounding the Church of the Holy Spirit and the former castle. The chapel of the Church of the Holy Spirit is also part of the Way of the Cross. The church houses the venerated crucifix “Ukrzyżowany Uśmiechnięty” (“Smiling Crucifix”), which depicts Christ with a serene, smiling face. Groups of visitors can book a secular guide to lead them around the grounds of Kalwaria and to the castle ruins; arrange this with the sanctuary.
Garden, Bug River and Outdoor Activities
The Marian Herb Garden is laid out as a labyrinth in the shape of unfolding rose petals. Its design is intended to evoke the rosary and highlight the Marian pilgrimage site. One large fountain and four smaller ones present fundamental truths of the faith in book form. Visitors can sample or buy fresh and dried herbs, as well as herbal tea. Beside Rozlewisko Genezaret, on the edge of the forest, there is a grotto with Our Lady of Fatima.
The Bug River offers more opportunities: cycling and walking trails along the river are among the activities in Kodeń, along with kayaking and relaxation by the Bug. Paweł Sapieha Harbour invites visitors to relax and fish. From the harbour landing, visitors can cross Rozlewisko Genezaret by pedal boat and head out onto the reservoir. If you’re planning a pedal-boat trip, check with the provider in advance to confirm it is currently operating.
Kodeń is also a point of reference for a longer cycling trip: the Green Velo – Eastern Cycling Trail passes through the town. The section in Lublin Voivodeship is about 351 kilometres long and runs through Janów Podlaski, Kostomłoty, Kodeń, Jabłeczna, Sławatycze and Włodawa, among other places.
