The surviving medieval town plan, the market square with its distinctive town hall tower, and the Widawa show different sides of Bierutów. Two cycling routes start in town, and there is a prepared launch site for kayaks by the river. A stay here combines architectural history with practical options for active days. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Bierutów, you can consider whether you want your plans to focus more on historic buildings, a bike ride, or time on the water.

Town Walls, Town Hall and Churches

The circuit of town walls was probably built in the first half of the 14th century on the site of an earth-and-timber fortification. In the 15th century and early 16th century, it was strengthened with towers at three gates. The surviving medieval town plan makes these fortifications part of Bierutów’s historic layout.

The town hall has probably stood in the middle of the market square since the first half of the 15th century. Today, only the tower remains of the building, without its spire. The Gothic town hall tower, dating from the 15th century, plays the Bierutów hejnał, composed by a local musician, every day at 12 noon. The square thus brings together the history of the town hall and a daily musical tradition.

The Gothic Church of St Catherine was a castle church and a former Protestant church; it was built in the first half of the 13th century or earlier. The church contains a Baroque high altar dating from 1661. The main walls of the former Protestant cemetery church of the Holy Trinity have survived. It stands in the town park, in front of the former Wrocław Gate; the park was laid out on the cemetery grounds after 1945. St Joseph’s Parish Church represents a different period of construction: it was built from 1891 to 1893 in the Neo-Gothic style.

Cycling Routes with Different Estimated Times

The red-marked PTTK cycling route “Trasa folwarków” starts in the castle courtyard in Bierutów. It is about 20 kilometres long, with the ride estimated to take 2.5 to 3 hours. The green-marked “Trasa Doliny Widawy” starts at the railway station, covers about 30 kilometres, and has an estimated riding time of three hours. The second route is therefore about ten kilometres longer; its estimated time is at the upper end of the range given for the red route. Check the current markings for the green route before relying on them for navigation.

Kayaking and the Widawa

There is a specially prepared spot on the banks of the Widawa in Bierutów for launching kayaks. The kayak landing site is also suitable for bivouacking. From Bierutów, a water route more than 40 kilometres long leads by kayak to a suburb of Wrocław; the journey can be completed in several hours. Seasonal navigability varies along the river, so it is an additional factor to consider when planning a kayak trip.

For tourist information and updates on river conditions and the requirements for kayak trips, the Bierutów Town and Municipality Office and the Bierutów Municipal and Communal Cultural Centre are local points of contact. This makes it possible to compare the two cycling routes using their stated lengths and times, while seasonal river navigability also matters when planning a kayak trip. These different options give you a practical basis for tailoring your plans and accommodation search to the kind of stay you want.
