Legnicki: History, Nature and Trails

Monastery, Castle and Regional History

In Legnickie Pole, the present-day monastery complex was built in the 18th century. It is considered an important work of Silesian Late Baroque architecture. By decree of the President of Poland on 14 April 2004, the former Benedictine monastery complex was recognized as a Monument of History of Poland. The history of the place also includes the former Church of the Holy Trinity, which now houses a museum. Different historical associations thus come together in one place: the architecture of the monastery complex and the former church’s current use as a museum.

The medieval castle in Prochowice represents a different era. Stefan of Prochowice had it built around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries; the English landscape park surrounding the castle has also been preserved and covers 12.33 hectares. In Chojnów stands Piast Castle, home to the Regional Museum. It was built around 1290 on the left bank of the Skora. Those interested in comparing historic buildings and their respective surroundings will find a range of examples here, rather than just one uniform attraction.

Other highlights include the early medieval hillfort site in Krajów, in the municipality of Krotoszyce, and the 18th-century Dutch windmill in Jerzmanice. It is one of the most valuable buildings in Legnicki County. In Pątnówek stands a cult sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk from the early 18th century. It was added to the register of protected monuments of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in 2010. Trails Through Landscape and History

The trails also vary in length and theme. The 20-kilometre Szlak Bitwy nad Kaczawą connects Dunino, Krajów, Winnica, Bielowice, Warmątowice Sienkiewiczowskie, Tyńczyk and Janowice Duże. The 72-kilometre Szlak dookoła Legnicy offers a longer route: it passes through areas of high natural value and places associated with the events of 1241 and the Battle of the Kaczawa during the Napoleonic Wars.

The 12-kilometre Szlak Bitwy 1241 roku runs from Legnica railway station via Legnica-Piekary and Bartoszów to Legnickie Pole. The green Szlak nad Nysą Szaloną is 19 kilometres long and follows the scenic valley of the Nysa Szalona along the edge of the Janowicki Plateau. The route combines a clear historical focus with a trail through a river valley. The Cistercian Trail, in turn, runs through Legnicki County and the municipalities of Krotoszyce, Legnica, Legnickie Pole, Kunice and Prochowice, and is associated with the Cistercians’ presence in Lower Silesia.

Water and Nature as a Focus of Their Own

The 95-hectare Jezioro Kunickie offers a different perspective on the region. The lake offers opportunities for water sports, fishing, swimming and walks along the shore, and is home to a wide variety of water birds. At the watersports centres located there, sailboats, kayaks, motorboats and surfboards were available to rent. Nature observation and activities on the water are different aspects of a stay by the lake; for a trip with varied interests, you can choose your focus accordingly.

Natural areas are also a major attraction away from the lake. The Mierzowice Ecological Corridor comprises 155.25 hectares of woodland and meadows. The Natura 2000 site Dolina Odry in the municipalities of Prochowice and Ścinawa includes riparian forests and a diverse range of wildlife. The bird species mentioned include grey herons, black storks, kestrels, and red and black kites. The Historical Encampment in Warmątowice Sienkiewiczowskie re-enacts a battle that took place there during the Napoleonic campaign of 1813.
