Kowary invites you to discover different sides of the town: underground routes lead into the history of mining, a museum is dedicated to past decades, and paths take you through a municipal park. There are also activities for hikers and cyclists, as well as a miniature exhibition featuring buildings from Lower Silesia. Mining history underground

The Sztolnie Kowary – Liczyrzepa Uranium Mine visitor route passes through authentic tunnels that are part of the historic Liczyrzepa Uranium Mine complex. Another route, Kopalnia Podgórze, runs through the workings of the former Kopalnia Podgórze of the same name in Kowary. It is about 1,600 metres long.

Those interested in the history of mining can also consider the red-marked “Szlak Tradycji Górniczych” (Mining Traditions Trail). It is just over 7 kilometres long; each leg takes no more than two and a half hours. The route offers a different way to explore the subject than the underground visitor routes: it is an educational trail whose length and estimated time are useful, concrete details for planning.

Museum, park and miniatures

The Sentymentów Museum is housed in a building of the former carpet factory and displays artefacts from past decades. It also offers interactive retro experiences: visitors can use a rotary-dial landline telephone or try out retro Atari or Commodore computers. The museum visit therefore combines exhibits with devices visitors can operate themselves. This offers a distinct way to explore the past and differs from looking inside the former mine workings.

For a break between cultural discoveries, Leśny Park Miejski offers a different setting: walking paths wind between trees and shrubs, including common and rarer species. Park Miniatur Zabytków Dolnego Śląska features scale models of castles, monasteries, churches and historic town centres from Lower Silesia. The models are made to a scale of 1:25. This brings together different types of historic buildings in a single exhibition. It is aimed at anyone interested in architecture and the region’s built heritage; it complements visits that focus on mining history or everyday objects in Kowary itself.

On foot or by bike

There are also different options for active days. In addition to the educational trail, the Euroregional “Liczyrzepa” ER-2 cycling route passes through Kowary. The “Obwodnica Kowarska” is a cycling loop around Kowary, approximately 33 kilometres long. This gives you two different ways to cycle: a route that passes through the town and a loop around Kowary. The approximate length of the loop is a useful starting point if you want to plan your outings around cycling.
