Głogów: Views and urban history

A prominent landmark is the town hall tower: it is 80.35 m high and was reconstructed in 1994–1996 based on a design from 1720. At a height of 47 m, there is a viewing point that is open on Sundays from 2 to 6 pm; reservations are required. The town hall itself also tells the story of several building phases. It dates back to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, while its present appearance reflects renovations carried out in 1832–1835 and 1847–1850. Vaulted rooms dating from the transition between Gothic and Renaissance styles have been preserved in the west wing.

The Głogów Tourist Information Centre is in the Old Town, in the Block Koszarowy building at Koszarowa 1. The Muzeum Archeologiczno-Historyczne is also a good option for a culture-focused stay: it is located in the Zamek Książęcy, which was rebuilt from 1971 to 1983. At the museum, you can enter the castle tower. There, the exhibition “Architectural Details from the Old Town” displays sculptures and other stone objects from former buildings in Głogów. The castle tower is therefore a separate viewpoint, distinct from the town hall tower.

Theater, castle and literary traces

The reconstructed Teatr im. Andreasa Gryphiusa was rebuilt in 2017–2019. Today, it is home to a branch of the Municipal Cultural Centre and serves as a venue for concerts, performances and conferences. Those interested in architecture and culture can include these places in their itinerary alongside the historic rooms of the town hall and the exhibition in the castle.

Special cultural attractions can also be found outside Głogów. In Czerna, in the municipality of Żukowice, there is a palace in the Gothic-Renaissance style. Brzeg Głogowski has a well-preserved castle complex. Its park probably dates from the mid-19th century; a park had already existed on this site in the 18th century. Edward Stachura lived and worked in Grochowice in the winter of 1967. The lives of the villagers were portrayed in his work “Siekierezada”—a literary connection for travellers interested not only in buildings but also in the cultural history of these places.

The Oder Valley and routes for active days

In Głogów County, the Oder Valley preserves visible river bends, oxbow lakes and sandbanks. The riverside area between Borek and Leszkowice has been protected since 1986. A bird migration route runs through the valley, which is also home to numerous waterbird habitats. The surroundings are particularly well suited to fishing and relaxation around Borkowo, Golkowice and Mileszyn. This natural landscape contrasts distinctly with Głogów’s observation towers and cultural sites.

There are several routes to choose from for a cycling trip. In the municipality of Pęcław, a cycle path runs along the left bank of the Oder from Chobienia to Głogów. Another route, “Jerzmanowa–Głogów–Jerzmanowa”, is 32 km long. There is also an educational trail in Pęcław on the Białołęka–Droglowice–Leszkowice route. In Jerzmanowa, the castle park is ideal for long walks. Its 5-hectare collection of trees includes avenues and evergreen ivy; local residents have stocked the ponds with fish. The municipality of Jerzmanowa also recommends fishing in the commercially operated ponds in Bądzów, which are home to various fish species. If you prefer river landscapes, cycling, walking or fishing, you can take these interests into account when choosing the focus of your holiday. When looking for a holiday apartment, the first decision is whether you want to focus your trip more on Głogów’s cultural attractions or on nature and outdoor activities.
