Gilów combines historic buildings in the village with a nearby hillfort site and a long hiking trail that passes through the village. This lets you choose different focuses for your stay: learn about architecture and local history, or set aside a whole day for the hike. The sights tell of different periods and styles of construction, from the palace to two churches, each with its own history.
The hillfort site also brings a different historical perspective to your travel plans. It lies east of Gilów, near the road to Niemcza. If you are interested in cultural history and outdoor activities, you can treat these as separate parts of your stay without combining them into a single route.
Palace and Park
The palace stands in the eastern part of Gilów. It was originally built for the Tschirsky family around the turn of the 18th century. In the mid-19th century, the Nitschke family gave it a Neoclassical design. Distinctive features include a columned portico and a garden pavilion accessible from the park.
The two-storey palace has a rectangular floor plan, a hipped roof and dormer windows. These features give the building a clear, compact form, while the columned portico adds a distinctive accent. An overgrown park lies to the east.
Two Churches with Their Own Histories
The branch church of St. Hedwig is a listed historic building dating from the 16th to the 18th century. The church complex includes a perimeter wall and a gate at the parish church. The combination of the church building and its enclosed grounds distinguishes this site from the history of the palace and makes it a separate point of interest for visitors interested in cultural history.
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus dates from the mid-19th century; its tower was built in 1939. The church contains a Neo-Renaissance altar that originally came from the former convent of the Grey Sisters in Gilów. The altar’s provenance adds another connection to local history to the church’s architectural history. Together, the two churches reflect different historical contexts, and their construction dates and histories should not be confused.
The Hillfort Site East of Gilów
The Gilów hillfort site lies on a partly rocky hill rising to 281 metres and covers approximately 4.5 hectares. The surviving ramparts are up to 8 metres high and up to 12 metres wide at the base. The fortified complex was built by a group of people who came from the Great Moravian Empire into territories controlled by the Ślężanie. The large site was used only for a short time.

A Hike as a Day-Long Activity
The yellow hiking trail runs from Bielawa to Gromnik, passing through Myśliszów, Owiesno, Piława Dolna, Marianówek, Gilów, Niemcza, Wojsławice and Piotrówek. The long but easy route connects the Owl Mountains with the Niemczańsko-Strzelińskie Hills. Walking the full route takes a whole day. If you plan to include this hike in your stay, you should therefore treat it as a day-long activity rather than a short walk.
