Wieruszowski on the Prosna

Enjoy the water and spend time in Marianka Park

The section of the Prosna between Bolesławiec, Wieruszów, Kalisz and Pyzdry forms a 153 km kayaking route. In Wieruszów, kayaks and pedal boats are available at the kayak landing stage on Kilińskiego Street. This means that, alongside the longer river route, there are also options for spending time on the water in town. If the kayaking route is your main focus, you can take its distance and the various places along it into account when planning your trip.

At Marianka Park, the Brzeźnica River is complemented by facilities for a range of interests. A walking path runs alongside the river, and there is also a footbridge and cycle bridge. Beyond the bridge lies an artificial beach with a beach volleyball court. The park also has an ecological playground, an event stage with a spectator area, a high ropes course and a climbing wall. These different facilities make the park an option in its own right for your stay: you can consider a walk, exercise and play without planning your day solely around a kayaking trip.

River routes and nature in the surrounding area

The green recreational route “Around Wieruszów” is 32.7 km long and begins and ends in Wieruszów. Its length and circular route set it apart from a short walk in Marianka Park; take the distance into account if you choose this route for your day’s plans. Another option is the “To the Prosna” route, which follows the river through the “Dolina Prosny” protected landscape area.

Distinctive natural and landscape features can also be found nearby. The ring-shaped hillfort site in Kuźnica Skakawska covers about 48 hectares. There is also an avenue of 96 red oaks along the local road to Kuźnica Skakawska, designated as a natural monument. Two English oaks beside the Church of St. Roch are also natural monuments. These destinations complement the river routes with a chance to see protected trees and a large hillfort site.

Churches, town history and culture

The documented beginnings of the Pauline monastery complex in Wieruszów date back to 1401. The single-nave, brick Church of the Holy Spirit within the monastery complex is Baroque and was completed in 1676. The church houses what is described as the only surviving Gothic work of art in Wieruszów: the image of the Lord Jesus of the Five Wounds, considered to be grace-giving and also known as the image of the Divine Mercy.

Other traces lead to different chapters in the town’s history. On the left bank of the Prosna, near the mouth of the Niesób, relics of the former castle remain; the original castle was probably built around the middle of the 14th century. The market square is a relic of the medieval town layout and is a protected monument. An independent Jewish community was established in Wieruszów in 1810; a brick synagogue was built in 1850. The cemetery of the Parish of St. Spiritus includes Orthodox and Evangelical cemeteries, as well as brick Catholic and Evangelical Augsburg chapels dating from the late 19th century. It is also home to the tomb of the Pauline monks and historic graves and tombs from 1833 to 1916.

The Wieruszowski Dom Kultury is also a useful point of reference for cultural activities in town: it has included the “Słońce” cinema since 1992 and organizes activities for children, young people and older people. Those wishing to explore the history of the churches further can visit the wooden Church of St. Wojciech in Cieszęcin, built in 1789. In 1995, it was elevated to the status of the Diocesan Shrine of St. Wojciech for the Diocese of Kalisz. In Kuźnica Skakawska stands the wooden Church of St. Roch, built in 1744, with a late Renaissance high altar from the first half of the 17th century.

Wieruszów–Miasto railway stop is in Wieruszów on railway line 181 between Wieluń Dąbrowa and Kępno.
