St. Anne’s Church: Construction and Reconstruction
St. Anne’s Church was built in the Baroque style. It has three naves and a 46-metre-high tower. It was built between 1779 and 1785 on the site of an earlier wooden place of worship. Its founder was Ignacy Lipski, then the owner of Błaszki. Two years after construction was completed, a fire destroyed the church; it was rebuilt in 1789. In 1810, it was enclosed by a wall with two chapels that served as ossuaries. The building’s history thus brings together several clearly dated construction phases.
Altars, Paintings and a Memorial
The church has six altars. The high altar and two side altars are made of stucco; two portable altars are made of wood and designed in the Baroque style. The high altar houses a painting of St. Anne, painted by J. Balukiewicz in 1889. The choir contains a Classicist marble memorial to General Józef Lipski, who died in 1817; it bears the Grabie coat of arms. Baroque altar design and a Classicist memorial thus stand side by side as distinct art forms in the same church interior.
The Market Square and Historic Buildings
Błaszki’s large historic market square is now divided into two squares. The brick community hall “Błaszkowianka” is now used as a residential building and is registered as a historic monument. The municipal bathhouse is also registered as a historic monument; it dates from the early 20th century. These local details add further historic buildings to the church’s history without obscuring the distinct character of each building.
Two Routes Through Błaszki
The 50-kilometre red Szlak powstańców 1863 r. (1863 Insurgents’ Trail) passes through Błaszki. Points of interest mentioned along the route include the “Błaszkowianka” community hall, St. Anne’s Church and the bathhouse. Check local route conditions before setting out.
