Białka – in the Skawica Valley

Białka lies in the valley of the Skawica River, along the road to Zawoja. The river and the road provide two clear geographical reference points for the village: the valley and the route towards Zawoja. A brick chapel dating from the 19th century stands in Białka. A small bell turret sits on its roof. The brick Church of Our Lady, Protectress of Families (Najświętszej Maryi Panny Opiekunki Rodzin) was built in 1985; its main altar contains a copy of the painting of Our Lady of Maków (Matki Boskiej Makowskiej). The chapel and the church thus represent different periods of construction, while the bell turret and the altarpiece each identify a specific feature of the building.

A stone wayside shrine dating from 1865 stands at Rola Madejowa in Białka. Together with the chapel, it illustrates different forms of sacred architecture: a brick chapel with a bell and a stone wayside shrine. Białka is also home to a cholera cemetery, a more sombre historical landmark alongside the religious buildings.

An early mention

The first mention of Białka dates from 1564. At that time, Starosta Stanisław Wolski recorded the village during an inspection of the Lanckorona starosty. This gives the village’s early history a precise date, a named official and a specific occasion. Unlike the buildings, the focus here is on the written record of the village.
