Routes with different themes

The blue Szlak Warowni Jurajskich passes through Dłużec. Check current route conditions before your trip. The Szlak Architektury Drewnianej, a driving route, offers a different perspective: it also passes through Dłużec and includes the wooden Church of St. Lawrence and St. Nicholas. The two routes can be distinguished by their different themes—the first is a blue trail, while the other is a driving route focused on wooden architecture. You can plan accordingly, depending on whether you are more interested in a trail or a route with an architectural focus.

Church, art and architectural history

The parish church, dating from 1780, stands on the site of an older church first mentioned in 1325. The history of the church site therefore goes back further than the present building. Later changes can also be placed in context: at the beginning of the 20th century, the nave was extended and connected to the tower. The tower had been built as a free-standing bell tower in 1825. The building’s history thus comprises several clearly distinct stages—from the first mention of the older church, through the free-standing tower, to the extension of the nave.

A particular artistic highlight is the side altar in the Church of St. Nicholas and St. Lawrence. Designed as a triptych, it includes a statue of the enthroned Virgin Mary from the last quarter of the 15th century. It also features late Gothic paintings and Gothic statues of saints. The term “triptych” refers to a work of art designed in three parts; the altar therefore brings together several art forms. The combination of the statue of Mary, the paintings and the figures of saints gives art lovers a specific reason to take a closer look at the church’s furnishings.

Another notable historic building stands outside the church. About one kilometre farther in the direction of Pilica, at the place known as Lizak, a square Barbara Chapel from the 18th century stands on a small rock among farm buildings. It houses a statue of the saint dating from the early 17th century. The building and the statue thus come from different centuries, adding another point of historical interest alongside the parish church.

Patronal feasts and cultural venues

The parish celebrates its patronal feasts on St. Nicholas Day, 6 December, and on the Feast of St. Lawrence, 10 August. Both dates honour saints whose names are also associated with the church, and mark different times of year. If you are interested in local traditions, these two feast days are specific dates to keep in mind.

Another cultural institution is a branch of the Wolbrom Municipal Public Library. It is located in the spacious fire station in Dłużec. Alongside the church’s history, it points to another aspect of cultural life in the village. Together with the routes and historic buildings, it offers a varied range of things to explore without reducing Dłużec to a single attraction.
