Żegiestów: Trails, the Poprad and Churches

In Żegiestów-Zdrój, the range of trails runs from a short stroll to a hiking route over wooded slopes and clearings. Along the riverbank, the “Łopata Polska” nature trail combines walking with nature education and outdoor recreation. Other attractions include the “Anna” pump room, churches with different religious affiliations and the Poprad, a border river. Hiking trails between the spa district and the riverbank

The blue hiking trail starts in Żegiestów-Zdrój and leads over wooded slopes and through clearings, as well as the areas around Pusta Wielka and Wyżnie Młaki, to the Bacówka PTTK nad Wierchomlą mountain hut. Forest and clearings shape the sequence of trail sections; the named areas and destination give the route a clear direction. When planning, remember to account for the return journey as well. A different kind of outing is the roughly half-kilometre walk through the spa district to the “Anna” pump room. Its approximate length makes this a short option, whereas the blue hiking trail is defined by its sequence of ascents, clearings and named areas. The Poprad and other experiences

Near Żegiestów-Zdrój, the Poprad forms a gorge. It is also a Polish-Slovak border river here. You can go canoeing or rafting on the Poprad in this area. If you plan such a trip, check in advance whether it is available at the time of your visit. This keeps the river trip as a separate activity from the hike through the gorge area. A ski lift is also counted among Żegiestów’s attractions.

Churches and architectural history

The former Greek Catholic Church of St Anne and St Michael the Archangel in Żegiestów was built between 1917 and 1925 in the ecclesiastical architectural tradition. Its stone-and-brick building has a cruciform ground plan, a nave and two sacristy extensions. The ground plan shows the shape of the building from above; the nave is the central longitudinal space of a church. For anyone interested in church architecture, these features provide specific points of reference for understanding the building’s form and structure. Żegiestów-Zdrój is also home to the filial Church of St Kinga, which belongs to the parish in Żegiestów. The two churches can thus also be distinguished by their different ecclesiastical affiliations.
