Zaskale: Trails, Culture and Regional Cuisine

Zaskale offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: a tourist trail runs through the village, the Szlak Wokół Tatr connects it to a longer route, and religious and cultural events offer insights into the village’s history. Regional dishes also feature at local events.

Trails and Routes Through Zaskale

The tourist Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer Trail passes through Zaskale. From Szaflary, it runs via Ludźmierz, Krauszów, Dział and Pieniążkowice to the summit of Zeleźnica. This sequence of places situates Zaskale between the starting point of Szaflary and the summit; the village is one section of the trail, not its endpoint. For hikers, the named places and the summit destination are practical reference points.

The Szlak Wokół Tatr covers a different scale. A developed 35 km section runs on the Polish side from Nowy Targ through Zaskale, Rogoźnik, Stare Bystre, Czarny Dunajec and Podczerwone to the state border. On the Slovak side, the route continues through Suchá Góra, Głodówka and Lasek to Trstená. In winter, the routes mentioned serve as cross-country skiing trails. Thus, the route sequence to the summit of Zeleźnica and the 35 km section on the Polish side to the state border offer distinct geographical points of reference.

There is also a specific cycling connection: an official route description for a family bike ride follows the Szlak Wokół Tatr through Zaskale.

Church, Ensemble and Regional Performances

The cornerstone of St. Adalbert’s Church in Zaskale was consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1987. This date is a specific reference point in the village’s history. The “Mali Zaskalanie” ensemble is a cultural focal point: it began its activities at the primary school in Zaskale in 1990. The ensemble performed at community events such as Zoskalańskie Jodełko, Opłatek Wiejski and the family festival in Zaskale.

Further performances took place in the wider region: at the Przeziyracka Młodyk Toniecnikow i Śpiywokow Góralskich in Ratułów and at the Papieska Majówka in Bachledówka. These locations complement the events in Zaskale with two additional venues outside the village.

Regional Cuisine at Events

The report on the 2018 edition describes Zoskalańskie Jodełko as a long-standing annual event where guests could sample regional dishes, cakes and cheeses. Another culinary event was the 24th Gminny Konkurs Potraw Regionalnych: on November 17, women cooks from across the Szaflary municipality gathered at the fire station in Zaskale. The two types of event have different focuses: one offers a chance to sample regional products, while the other is a competition centered on regional dishes.
