Ojców: Rocks, History and Nature
Accommodation in Ojców
Ojców combines striking rock formations in the Prądnik Valley with archaeological traces and a layered architectural history. Between a rock gate, a spring with an unusually shaped basin and the remains of the former spa resort, there are a variety of topics to explore on your trip. When planning, you can decide whether you are more interested in the landscape, history or the paths through the valley.
Rock formations and special details in the valley
The Kraków Gate is one of the rock gates in Ojców National Park. It is located in the Prądnik Valley and forms the end of the Wąwóz za Krakowską Bramą gorge where it opens into the valley. The combination of valley, rock gate and gorge makes this a striking landscape feature. Jonaszówka offers a different perspective: the rock is 20 metres high and is also located in the Prądnik Valley in the national park. There is a viewpoint at its summit, with views of Ojców and the surrounding area.
A smaller, unusual landscape feature is the Źródło Miłości (Spring of Love). Its water flows into a basin whose floor has been carved out of the rock in the shape of a heart. The basin and the rock formation, visible from afar, make different impressions: here, the shape of a single detail catches the eye; there, the view over Ojców and its surroundings. If you would like to discover different natural features during a shared stay, there is more than one scale at which to take in the valley.
Archaeology and architectural history
Jaskinia Ciemna (Ojcowska) Cave is considered one of Poland’s most valuable archaeological sites. This gives a trip to Ojców an archaeological dimension in addition to its visible rock formations. The “Na Wodzie” chapel is dedicated to Saint Joseph the Craftsman (Worker). It was established in 1901 in a former bathhouse at the spa resort; its history thus links the building’s former use with its conversion into a chapel.
Ojców Castle also tells the story of several eras. Its origins are connected with King Casimir the Great’s fortification measures in the second half of the 14th century. The castle dates from the 13th century and was expanded by Casimir the Great in the second half of the 14th century. It was badly damaged during the Swedish Deluge and restored in 1660. Today, it is a ruin. For those interested in history, several questions naturally arise: the castle’s early origins, its later expansion and the traces of its eventful history.
Nature and routes through Ojców
Ogród Ojcowski (Ojców Garden) features endangered species as well as species characteristic of the park’s typical forest communities. These include species from oak-hornbeam forests, meadows and xerothermic grasslands. The nature exhibition at Ojców National Park presented information about the park’s geology, prehistory, fauna and flora. Its range of topics brings nature and Earth’s history together, while the garden draws attention to particular species and habitats.
For finding your way on a hike, the relationship between the trails is quite straightforward: the blue Trail of the Jurassic Strongholds runs alongside the red hiking trail through the Prądnik Valley, via Ojców, to Grodzisko and Skała. Before your hike, check the park’s current visitor information for temporary route changes.
Plan your stay around your interests
If you are travelling with several people who have different interests, you can plan your visit to Ojców from a range of perspectives: archaeological and architectural themes, the rock formations of the valley, or a hike along the shared section of the two marked trails. Before searching for a holiday apartment in Ojców, consider which of these interests you want to shape your days.
