Dobrzejewice: St. Lawrence Church and Local History
Accommodation in Dobrzejewice
Dobrzejewice brings together a specific aspect of local history, architecture, and a dated example of a hike. St. Lawrence Church combines Neo-Gothic architecture with Rococo furnishings; the history of a former cholera cemetery is also part of the town’s historical story. This gives your travel planning a clear focus: you can consider whether you are more interested in religious architecture and the history of remembrance, or whether you would also like to include exercise and sport.
St. Lawrence Church: Building History and Rococo Furnishings
St. Lawrence Church is a single-nave brick building, constructed in the Neo-Gothic style between 1888 and 1893. It replaced an older wooden church, probably dating from the 14th century, which was destroyed toward the end of the 19th century. The present building and its predecessor therefore represent different phases of construction. The tower is also part of the church’s history: it once had a tower that was destroyed during the First World War. These turning points give the architecture a specific historical context and make the church interesting to travelers who want to learn about the development of a religious building.
The furnishings include several works in the Rococo style. The Rococo high altar, dating from the 18th century, comes from Włocławek Cathedral. The upper section of the altar features a painting of St. Lawrence from the late 18th century, adorned with embossed silverwork. Two side altars from the second half of the 18th century are dedicated to St. Anthony and St. Anne. A Rococo pulpit and a Rococo baptismal font complete the furnishings. This makes it possible to distinguish specific details as well as the architectural style: the origin of the high altar, the dedications of the side altars, and the different furnishings. They give the church an art-historical character that contrasts with its Neo-Gothic architecture.
The History of Remembrance and a Hike
Another chapter in the town’s history is the former cholera cemetery. It was located by a forest, and the graves had no headstones. The statue of St. Tekla was returned to its former location after almost 80 years. A karawaka—a memorial cross with two crossbars—was also erected there. These details connect the cemetery’s history with a specific statue and a distinctive monument. Together with the church’s building history, they offer a different perspective on religious history and remembrance in Dobrzejewice.
On May 20, 2023, a one-off hike in the PTTK series “Wędrówki rodzinne z PTTK” (Family Hikes with PTTK) went from Dobrzejewice via Brzozówka to Złotoria. The route was about 16 km long. Your holiday planning can therefore encompass different interests: architectural and local history on the one hand, and a specific day hike on the other. The date and approximate distance give this hiking topic a clear context.
