Protected trees in the park

An ash tree protected as a natural monument stands in the park in Wielgie. It is 22 m tall and has a trunk circumference of 430 cm. The two measurements convey different impressions of this individual tree: its height describes how far it reaches upwards, while its trunk circumference indicates the thickness of its trunk. A tree is also protected in the manor house and park complex: a red-leaved beech grows there and is likewise designated a natural monument. Visitors who enjoy focusing on distinctive trees and historic buildings during their stay will find both as separate points of interest in Wielgie.

Manor house and park complex: manor house, mill and distillery

The manor house and park complex includes a manor house built on the initiative of Count Miączyński in the fourth quarter of the 19th century. This dates the building to the final decades of that century. The complex also includes a brick mill built around 1900. Its rectangular floor plan, three storeys and gabled roof give it a different appearance from the distillery, which is also part of the complex.

The distillery was built in 1881. It is made of red brick, partly plastered, and comprises several sections of varying heights with shed roofs. This makes it possible to distinguish three different types of building: the manor house, the mill and the distillery. Their respective dates also remain distinct—the manor house dates from the fourth quarter of the 19th century, the mill from around 1900, and the distillery from 1881. Wooden church and Wooden Churches Trail

Wielgie is home to a wooden Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to św. Wawrzyńca. It dates from around the middle of the 18th century and is built using log construction on a stone base. The timber structure and stone foundation define different parts of the building. The approximate dating is important: the church is attributed to the mid-18th century, but this does not establish an exact year of construction.

The “Wooden Churches Trail” runs from Brzeźno through Ostrowite and Wielgie to Czarne. Wooden churches dating from the 18th century have been preserved along the route. Wielgie is therefore one stop on a trail connecting several place names and focusing on historic wooden churches. The manor house and park complex offers a different focus: here the main attractions are the manor house, mill and distillery, rather than the route.

Events from the cultural programme

The park hosted the 10th anniversary two-horse carriage-driving competition on 11 August 2019. This event is associated with a specific date in the past. The municipal cultural programme also included a family picnic in the park on 1 June and the 14th two-horse carriage-driving competition in Wielgie on 4 August. The two August competitions are recorded with different ordinals and dates, so they should not be combined into a single event. For families planning their activities, the picnic is a separate cultural occasion, while carriage driving is a sporting event.
