The Vistula Banks and the Granaries
Graudenz lies on one of the highest banks of the Vistula, with an elevation difference of more than 30 metres. The granaries are built into this slope—a construction method that defines the cityscape and vividly illustrates the connection between the river and trade. The first brick granaries in Grudziądz were built in the 14th century.
The Muzeum Handlu Wiślanego focuses on the Vistula route through Grudziądz as a trade route. It is housed in two historic granaries, Nos. 33 and 35 on Spichrzowa Street, which were renovated between 2020 and 2021. Anyone interested in the city’s history and trade will find a tangible insight here into the river’s role. The Muzeum im. ks. dr. Władysława Łęgi and its branch, the Muzeum Handlu Wiślanego, are open Tuesday to Sunday.
Medieval Traces and Museum Visits
The historic urban layout can also be explored beyond the granaries. Brama Wodna was built in the early 14th century and incorporated into the Grudziądz city walls. The medieval walls had five gates and ten towers. These details give an impression of the former fortifications without requiring a particular route.
Another focus on history is provided by archaeological exhibitions featuring grave goods from cemeteries and settlements in the area around Grudziądz. The finds date from the period of Roman influence, from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. A family outing can therefore offer a choice of architectural history, trade and archaeology, depending on what sparks the travellers’ curiosity.
Pałac Opatek is the former monastery gatehouse of the Benedictine order of nuns. The citadel is the main part of Twierdza Grudziądz fortress. Together with the city gate and the granaries, these buildings bring different chapters of Graudenz’s history to life.
Miejski Park and Views from Klimek
Miejski Park is designated as a natural and landscape complex. During its revitalisation, the former rose garden, the old rosarium, was restored. The park also has a playground and military exhibits: a T-34 tank from the Second World War, anti-tank guns and an aircraft. This offers families a different way to explore than a museum visit; the various themes can be included in the stay according to their interests.
Góra Zamkowa and the Wieża „Klimek“ tower are free to visit and require no booking. From November to February, opening hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; in March and October, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm; and from April to September, 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. These seasonal hours help you plan a visit to suit the time of year.
As you approach Grudziądz, the 1,098-metre road and railway bridge also catches the eye.
