City Walls and the History of the Old Town
The almost entirely preserved city walls form a 2,270-metre circuit. Their towers tell the story of a fortification that originally had 25 or 27 towers: 17 are fully preserved, and six survive in fragments. The contrast between the preserved towers and the fragments makes the city walls a particularly vivid part of the city’s history. The Old Town itself also holds a special place in history: in 2005, it was added to the Polish list of Historic Monuments by the President of the Republic of Poland.
The Muzeum Ziemi Chełmińskiej is located in the Ratusz at Rynek 28, 86-200 Chełmno. Its permanent exhibitions focus on Chełmno’s history and the Polish surgeon Ludwik Rydygier. There are also temporary exhibitions in the Sala Mieszczańska on the second floor. This makes it possible to explore the city’s history and a distinctive exhibition design in the same museum.
Church, Viewpoint and Exhibitions
The parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary houses a relic of Saint Valentine. The parish church can be visited free of charge every day through the entrance on ul. Franciszkańska: Monday to Saturday until 5:30 p.m. and Sunday until 5:00 p.m. At 60 metres, the church’s north-west tower is the highest viewpoint in Chełmno. The church thus offers several reasons to visit—from its religious significance to its place in the cityscape.
Another exhibition venue is the Baszta Prochowa. It currently houses the permanent exhibition “Z pradziejów Chełmna i okolic” and a small ethnographic exhibition. Above the gate, the “Na Bramce” chapel was built around 1620 and is associated with the veneration of Our Lady of Chełmno. These sites complement a museum visit with different ways of exploring the history of the city and its surroundings.
Walks, Guided Tours and Discoveries
