Tuchorza – Manor Park, Churches and Cycling Route

A 6.32-hectare manor park, two churches with distinct building histories and a cycling route through the village shape Tuchorza. The park in the northeastern part of the village dates back to 1732. In the 19th century, it was transformed into a landscaped park with a pond and an observation mound. Those interested in local history and architecture will find several specific points of interest here; the cycling route through Tuchorza is also an option for an active holiday.

Remarkable trees are also part of the park’s character: an oak has a circumference of 400 cm, a beech 380 cm and a black pine 330 cm. These measurements make the tree population a subject in its own right, alongside the layout with its pond and observation mound. The Szarka River flows north of Tuchorza; the park and the river represent distinct landscape features of the village, without forming a single route.

Churches and Building History

The former Protestant Church of St Peter and St Paul stands in the manor park. Built in 1905–1906, it is a Neo-Baroque structure. It has a single-nave floor plan, and the chancel ends in five sides. The upper part of the clock tower is octagonal. The furnishings also feature a range of styles: the church contains a Neo-Baroque organ case, a stone baptismal font in Neo-Gothic forms and stained-glass windows in the chancel.

The Church of the Holy Trinity has a different building history. It was built in 1998–1999 on the site of a historic wooden church dating from 1732, which burned down on the night of 7–8 February 1997. The present building is brick, with its exterior clad in boards to resemble the old church. A weather vane on the bell tower is the only surviving piece of the former church. The new altar, featuring a figure of the Holy Trinity, was created by Poznań sculptor Roman Kosmala.

Other buildings also provide historic points of reference in the village landscape. East of St Peter and St Paul’s stands the Neo-Gothic burial chapel of the von Kottwitz family, dating from around 1880. At the southern edge of the park, a presbytery dating from the early 20th century is now used as a parish house; a school building from the late 19th century stands on the western side of the park. The different functions and construction dates can be considered separately when exploring Tuchorza’s history, rather than assigning all the buildings to a single period.

Cycling Route and Memorial Site

The “Drewniane budownictwo ludowe” cycling route passes through Tuchorza and is 20 km long. The approximate cycling time without breaks is three hours. The route runs partly on paved and partly on unpaved paths and is rated as moderately difficult. Its length, surface and difficulty rating give you concrete points to consider when deciding whether this cycling route fits your holiday plans.

The Tuchorza crime memorial offers a different way to engage with history. It commemorates the execution by hanging of 15 Poles on 9 July 1942. The memorial stands west of the village, on a wooded dune hill along the road to Karna. As a distinct place to visit, it differs from the churches and buildings, whose history is shaped primarily by their architecture and use.

The local singing tradition is another distinctive feature: “Tuchorzacy” exists both as a singing group and as a men’s choir. A railway station named after Tuchorza is located in the village of Stara Tuchorza, farther south; bear this distinction in mind when finding your way around.
