In Wągrowiec, two rivers meet in an unusual way: the confluence of the Wełna and Nielba is considered a unique hydrological phenomenon and the only one of its kind in Poland. The city is also home to a former Cistercian monastery complex, a lapidarium, performances of the “Dancing Fountain” and a water and leisure complex. This makes the city an interesting destination for anyone who wants to focus their trip on culture, special places and activities.

Experience the river confluence along two routes

You can reach the confluence of the Wełna and Nielba via a promenade. There are two described routes: one leads from the city centre via Aleja Jana Pawła II, while the other starts on Gnieźnieńska Street. You can choose your route based on where you would like to start; both lead to the river confluence. This unusual hydrological phenomenon is a specific reason to see Wągrowiec as more than just a name on the map and to make a point of including one of the city's unusual places in your stay.

If you enjoy combining different experiences on a trip, you can complement this visit with the city's cultural attractions. The river confluence represents a natural and aquatic phenomenon, while the monastery complex and lapidarium tell other stories about Wągrowiec's past. This lets you choose the focus of your day according to your interests, without suggesting that these places tell the same story.

Monastery history and remembrance

The former Cistercian monastery complex bears witness to the city's rich past and is the oldest Cistercian abbey in Greater Poland. One particularly memorable experience is visiting the underground rooms of the church, where monks were buried. If you are interested in the monastery's history, this also offers a glimpse into an area that differs from a tour of the complex's above-ground sections.

Another stop offers a chance to remember Wągrowiec's Jewish residents. A group of 49 young people retrieved submerged Jewish gravestones from the bed of the Struga Gołaniecka river. The recovered gravestones were placed on the slope of the former Jewish cemetery, where the lapidarium is now located. The site makes the memory of Wągrowiec's Jewish community tangible. Together with the former monastery, it offers two distinct ways to explore the city's past.

Performances, city games and water experiences

The “Dancing Fountain” puts on performances every day from spring to autumn: at midday and after dark. These two times of day offer regular opportunities to include the fountain in your stay. A collection of four tourist games offers another way to get to know Wągrowiec. They let you explore the city playfully, rather than focusing your visit exclusively on individual historical sites.

Aquapark Wągrowiec is a water and leisure complex with swimming lessons, leisure and sports pools, and an 80-metre-long slide. It also has a current channel, saunas and a salt grotto with a graduation tower. The facilities thus include various water attractions as well as other amenities within the complex. If you would like to include these activities, Wągrowiec offers a focus on water alongside its historical and urban experiences.

A local flavour and choosing a holiday destination

Coffee in Wągrowiec also brings together different regional roots: the drink combines Cistercian and Pałuki influences. Those interested can try it at a local café; it is also available as a promotional product from Wągrowiec. This offers another way to discover the monastery's history—not through a visit, but through a local product.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide which of Wągrowiec's features you want to shape your stay: the river confluence, its history and remembrance, performances and city games, or water and leisure activities. If you would like to include several of these in your trip, Wągrowiec is a destination where you can put together your own selection of experiences. Search for a holiday apartment or holiday home in the area, and plan your visits around the routes and performance times listed above.
