Śrem stretches across both banks of the Warta. The city brings together cultural attractions and opportunities to get around on foot or by bike along the river. There is also a distinctive landscape feature south of the city: Lake Grzymisławskie lies in a narrow, deep trough that is 7.5 kilometres long. This lets you choose different focuses for your stay, from architecture and film to waterside trails and a landscape that differs markedly from the city.
The Warta and the landscape south of Śrem
The Promenada nad Wartą is a walking and cycling path along the Warta. You can include it in your plans as an option for getting some exercise, without tying the outing to a set programme. If you prefer to explore a route on foot rather than by bike, this path accommodates both. Its name and course along the river make the Promenada a different kind of experience from the city’s cultural venues.
Lake Grzymisławskie lies south of Śrem. Its position in a narrow, deep trough measuring 7.5 kilometres gives the lake a distinctive landscape form. The length refers to the trough; it does not describe a walking or cycling route. If you are interested in landscapes and bodies of water, you can make the lake a focus of a separate outing. Alongside the walking and cycling path by the Warta, this gives you two distinct, clearly defined ways to experience the water and its surroundings.
Film, museums and events
The Kinoteatr Słonko in Śrem screens premiere films and offers special events and broadcasts. Its programme therefore includes special dates and broadcasts as well as films. At the Muzeum Śremskie, “Niedziela w Muzeum” is a regular event: it takes place once a month from 12:00 to 16:00 and is accompanied by an opening or an occasional event. This is distinct from the “Wystawa Plenerowa”, an outdoor exhibition in the museum garden. It is open year-round from 7:00 to 21:00. The two offerings therefore differ both in format and in the stated times: a monthly museum event on the one hand, and an outdoor exhibition open year-round on the other.
Architecture from different centuries
Śrem Town Hall was built in 1838. Its design draws on the “Rundbogen” style, widespread in the 19th century, which incorporates influences from the Renaissance and Classicism. The building thus combines a specific construction date with a style that draws on elements from two earlier periods.
Another striking building is the parish Church of the Assumption of Mary, also known as the Fara. Its tower is 62 metres high, and inside are star vaults dating from the 15th or 16th century. The Baroque Franciscan complex dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and comprises a church and a former Franciscan monastery. The town hall, the Fara and the Franciscan complex thus offer different architectural points of reference without needing to be grouped into a single historical period.
