Skoppum
Accommodation in Skoppum
Skoppum combines rail connections with a distinctive mix of hillforts, historical traces and trails through open agricultural landscapes. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on different things: travelling by train, connecting to Horten, or exploring history and enjoying outdoor activities. Which holiday apartment in Skoppum suits your trip also depends on which aspects of the place you particularly want to discover.
By train or onward towards Horten
Skoppum station is on the Vestfold Line. Trains run from there towards Oslo S, Gardermoen, Eidsvoll, Larvik and Skien. If you are planning to travel by rail, these destinations give you a clear idea of the connections available from the village. There is also a bus connection from the station to the centre of Horten, 7 km away.
For pedestrians and cyclists, a new foot and cycle path runs alongside Route 19 from the new Skoppum station eastwards towards the centre of Horten. It is designed as a safe route for both groups. The bus connection and the foot and cycle path are two different options that may be relevant to your plans. Consider whether the rail connection, the link to Horten town centre, or a route on foot or by bicycle is most important for your trip.
Trails through the landscape and traces of the railway
The foot and cycle path between Skoppum and Borre passes through a flat, open agricultural landscape. It was created shortly after the railway track was removed in 2008. This landscape gives the path a different character from the village’s historical points of interest: here, the open agricultural surroundings and the connection between Skoppum and Borre help you find your way.
The former Horten Line is also still visible at the station itself. Its old track can be seen on the ground there and continues southwards before becoming a foot and cycle path. Those interested in the history of railway lines will find another trace in the local landscape. There is ample parking by the Skoppum sports facility along the Reirborgen Trail, as well as a smaller car park at the southern end of the trail. This may be useful when arriving by car and choosing a starting point.
Hillforts and local history
Adalsborgen, also called Borgåsen, is a hillfort in Skoppum and one of three hillforts in Horten municipality. It is considered one of the most outstanding examples of hillforts in Vestfold. Reirborgen is the smallest of the three; remains of a rampart are visible along the southern edge of the hill. The two sites offer different historical points of interest: Adalsborgen stands out for its particular significance within Vestfold, while Reirborgen is notable as the smallest hillfort and for its visible wall remains.
The Reirborgen Trail also passes Viulsrød. The Swiss-style house served as the home of shoemaker Marinius Wiulsrød and also as the area’s first schoolhouse. Along the trail, you can therefore encounter stories of everyday life in the region as well as the hillfort. Another, quite different aspect of Skoppum is its modernised artificial-turf pitch, which became usable after the upgrade.
