Åsgårdstrand brings together Edvard Munch’s life story, a historic coastal town and a beach park. Painted wooden houses, the Kyststien and Badeparken give the town different facets: you can explore art and local history, hike through Munch’s landscape or include the bathing area in your day’s plans.

Munch’s House and the Historic Townscape

Edvard Munch kept his house in Åsgårdstrand throughout his life and returned there time and again. The property is the only one of his homes to have been preserved. The interior, studio and garden are protected. Munch painted several of his masterpieces in Åsgårdstrand, including “The Bridge”, “Four Girls in Åsgårdstrand” and “The Dance of Life”. Guided tours of the house are available, as are walks through Munch’s landscape.

The character of the town comes not only from individual buildings, but also from its painted wooden houses, street layout, gardens, squares and vegetation, which together form a cultural environment. The oldest buildings include large patrician estates and small houses dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Galleries and charming shops add to the cultural experience. The bathing tradition is also part of the town’s history: the Åsgårdstrand Women’s Bathing Club works to keep it alive in this coastal town.

On Foot or by Bike along the Kyststien

The Kyststien from Falkensten in Horten to Åsgårdstrand is about 13 kilometres long. At the Åsgårdstrand end, the trail passes Edvard Munch’s house, then continues through the garden and along the guest harbour to Badeparken. On this section of the route, Munch’s town and the coastal trail thus meet. The Kyststien towards Åsgårdstrand is also signposted as cycle route 1. If you would rather focus your trip on activity and scenery than on galleries and local history, the available walks and the trail offer two suitable starting points for your plans.

Badeparken: Another Side of the Coastal Town

Badeparken has a large grassy area, a sandy beach and a volleyball court. Facilities also include a jetty with a diving board and bathing ladder, public municipal toilets, an accessible ramp and permanent barbecue areas. The park therefore offers both space to relax and specific options for swimming, exercise and sharing a meal. Its different features can cater to different interests when planning your day; the ramp is a feature of the park in its own right and does not indicate the accessibility of other places.

If you’re travelling with children, you could consider different ideas for spending time together, such as the beach, the volleyball court or a walk along the Kyststien. Munch’s house and the historic buildings offer a different focus. This mix makes Åsgårdstrand an appealing choice if you’re looking for a holiday apartment in a town where art and coastal scenery shape the travel experience.
