Hof: Culture, Summit Trails and Golf

In Hof, a distinctive historic building, marked summit hikes and specific sporting events come together. Hof Church stands on a hill overlooking the surrounding agricultural landscape; there are also running and duathlon events, as well as golf. Hof is located on County Road 35.

Church and Cultural Landscape

Hof Church was built in 1150 as a masonry long church. As a cultural monument dating from before 1650, it is automatically protected. A large, detailed crucifix from the High Middle Ages hangs above the chancel arch. A chancel arch marks the transition to the choir; this makes it possible to understand the position of this distinctive detail even without prior knowledge of art history.

In the centre, a historical walking tour leads to various cultural monuments and introduces local history. If you would like to explore several stops rather than just one building, you can follow this tour. Hof is also notable for its large number of burial mounds. These add another aspect of the cultural landscape to the history of its buildings and local area.

Marked Trails and Active Events

Hof has ten marked summit hikes maintained by the hiking committee of Hof idrettslag. Hof IL maintains a marked summit trail to Vestfjellet, and Bråtan turløype is an existing hiking and ski trail. When planning, you can choose between several summit hikes, the specifically named destination of Vestfjellet, and a trail for both hiking and skiing.

The Hof Toppers Ultraløp covers a 47 km running course: 13 km on trails, 22 km on gravel roads and 12 km on asphalt. In the Hof Toppers Duathlon, participants alternate between cycling and running to several summits in Hof. The events have different focuses: the Ultraløp breaks down the route and surfaces, while the Duathlon centres on switching between two sports and the summits as destinations. Golf and Other Activities

Hof Golf Club’s course is located at Storeng Gård in Hof. The club has a driving range and a clubhouse with a pro shop; the practice area also includes a putting green, a bunker and a large area for the short game. There are therefore different areas to practise, from tee shots to the short game. Facilities may change; check the club’s latest information before planning a visit.

The club regularly runs Veien-til-golf courses for beginners. As dates may change, it is worth checking the latest course schedule before your trip. Hofhallen also has an indoor climbing and bouldering wall. If you plan to visit the hall, check access arrangements in advance.

In the Wider Holmestrand Destination

The Kyststien runs between Holmestrand and Sande within the wider Holmestrand destination; the route is approximately 13 km long. About 7 km follows a disused railway line through the forest, along the water and across rocky coastal terrain. People of all ages can use the Kyststien on foot or by bicycle for short or long trips. This gives Holmestrand its own touring focus within the wider region.
