Vennesla: Fjord Trails, Museum Railway and Industrial History

A trail along the Vennesla Fjord, a narrow-gauge museum railway and the history of timber floating give Vennesla several different facets. Exploring the fjord and the water

The Strandstien trail runs from the centre of Vennesla to Nesane, following the Vennesla Fjord. At Kuleberget, there is a diving and bathing facility by the fjord; its condition may change, so it is worth checking before your visit. In July, the library lends two rowing boats for one day each: a red 10-foot boat and a grey 12-foot boat. The seasonal loan service is available throughout July. The Vennesla swimming pool offers several clearly distinct water activities. The competition pool is 25 metres long, with a water temperature of 28 °C. There is also a 5-metre diving tower, fixed and springboards at 3 metres, and a springboard at 1 metre. The teaching pool is heated to 34 °C and has a wheelchair ramp; there is also a small paddling pool for the youngest children and a whirlpool. The facilities therefore include both a competition pool and pools and equipment for other forms of swimming.

Museum railway and industrial heritage

Setesdalsbanen is a narrow-gauge museum railway with a track gauge of 1,067 millimetres. Its 8-kilometre route runs between Grovane and Røyknes stations in the municipality of Vennesla. Four station buildings from the former railway have been preserved in the municipality: Vennesla stasjon, Grovane stasjon, Iveland stasjon and Hægeland stasjon at Kile. Together, the route and station buildings offer several tangible points of reference for railway history.

To travel from the centre of Vennesla, bus route 30 goes to Grovane station if you are visiting Setesdalsbanen, or to the Grovane bedehus stop for a direct route to the Tømmerrenna area. The municipality of Vennesla also has visible traces of its industrial history. Hunsfos Næringspark is located on Hunsøya and occupies a former paper mill, whose 30,000 square metres of buildings have been renovated. Rødbyen is Vennesla’s only surviving, intact workers’ housing complex and is considered an important cultural heritage site. The houses are privately owned. The director’s residence at Vigeland Brug is a listed building in the municipality and was protected in 1997.

Culture and everyday life in town

Vennesla bibliotek og kulturhus includes a library, a cinema and assembly hall, a café and several meeting rooms. In the centre of Vennesla, there is also a pedestrian street with shops, cafés and bakeries; the selection of shops may change. Paulen Nature Reserve preserves a diverse, relatively undisturbed coniferous forest and its biodiversity. Sagevannet has a bathing spot with a floating bathing platform; check its current condition before making specific plans.

Cultural history in the wider Vennesla destination also extends beyond the railway and paper industry. Vigeland hovedgård was completed in 1847 and listed in 1941. The house of the Bommen Elvemuseum on Drivenesvegen dates from the mid-17th century and is probably Vennesla’s oldest house. The museum displays objects from the time when the river was an important workplace in the town. Tømmerrenna is a cultural heritage site in the wider Vennesla destination.
