Nodeland: Hiking Trails, Culture and History

Nodeland offers several ways to make your trip both active and culturally enriching: the Barnevandrerstien runs in stages through the village and its surroundings, while Greipstad kirke, the open-air and local history museum Porsmyr Bygdetun, and the Sygna kultursenter offer their own insights. Hiking the Barnevandrerstien

One stage of the Barnevandrerstien begins at Greipstad kirke in Nodeland and ends at Torvet in central Kristiansand. It is 11 km long. Another described stage leads from Laudal to Nodeland, ends at Greipstad kirke, and is 31 km long. The distances differ considerably.

East of Nodeland, a section of the Barnevandrerstien follows the old Postvegen. It was built as a road in 1797 and formed part of the postal route until 1840. Here, the present-day hiking trail connects with a specific historical use of the route. The former postal route is a distinct section in the immediate vicinity of the destination; it does not automatically describe the route of the other stages mentioned.

Hiking trails of different lengths

Nodeland also has a signposted hiking trail at Grotjønn and Kulia, which is 3 km long. The Nordmannsvegen is nearby: this marked trail is 7.5 km long and passes through Finsland. It was formerly used as a work road, packhorse trail, and footpath. If you want to sort your outings by distance, you can compare these shorter and longer routes without treating them as the same trail.

Church, museum, and cultural centre

Greipstad kirke is a wooden long church with 330 seats. One notable historical detail is the smallest bell in the tower, which bears the year 1517. Porsmyr Bygdetun, an active open-air and local history museum, is located near the church. It takes about five minutes to walk there from the church. Coffee and waffles are sold there on some Sundays during the summer months.

Sygna kultursenter is a modernised cultural building in Nodeland. Its rooms can be hired for rehearsals, dance, concerts, performances, meetings, conferences, and other events. The building includes a cultural hall with 250 seats, a 135 m² practice hall with mirrors and a dance floor, and a conference room for 86 people.

If your main interest is hiking, you can consider the Barnevandrerstien routes and the trails at Grotjønn, Kulia, or Finsland as different options for outings. Nodeland station is on the Sørlandsbanen railway line; trains run from there towards Stavanger, Kristiansand, Oslo S, and Arendal. The station is unstaffed, and trains stop there only on request.
