Kristiansand: Coast, Culture and Nature

Kristiansand combines coastal experiences with city history, museums and opportunities for walks. The Beach Promenade route is 2.8 kilometres long and runs along the city’s coastline. There are also places with very different focuses: from Christiansholm Fortress in the harbour and the paths on Odderøya to the historic houses at Kristiansand Museum. When choosing your holiday apartment, it may therefore be helpful to first consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on the coast, culture or outdoor activities.

Coast and City Walks

Christiansholm Fortress was built from 1666 to 1672 on a small island in the harbour. A long footbridge connects the island to the beach, the city and Østre Strandgate. The fortress thus combines a historic site with a striking part of the harbour landscape. If you are interested in city history and maritime impressions, you can include it as a separate stop during your stay.

For a walk along the water, the 2.8-kilometre Beach Promenade route is a good option. If you would rather explore paths and viewpoints, Odderøya has walking trails and heights offering beautiful views of the city and harbour. The island was a naval base. Several of its paths and roads are suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and bicycles. When planning, note that this applies to several paths and roads, not necessarily every one.

Another coastal spot is Bystranda. It has bathing steps, showers and water taps, as well as a beach volleyball court. Facilities also include a bathing ramp and an accessible toilet. Nearby, Aquarama offers a water park, gym, spa and café. This means there are options with different focuses in addition to the beach.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

Baneheia has walking and hiking trails, viewpoints, swimming beaches and bathing rafts. There is also a 2.2-kilometre illuminated cross-country ski trail. Several options are available there: you can explore the paths and viewpoints or focus on the shores and swimming areas. The ski trail adds a dedicated cross-country skiing option.

On Odderøya, you can combine views of the city and harbour with a walk. The combination of heights and paths makes it especially appealing if you enjoy spending time outdoors. Families can choose from a variety of activities in Kristiansand, such as going for a walk, spending time by the water or visiting a museum. The right activities for you will depend on what you and your fellow travellers feel like doing.

History, Collections and Events

Kristiansand Museum is an open-air museum with 40 historic houses. They are arranged in Setesdal Farm and Kristiansand’s Old Street. During the summer season, there are activities for children, including encounters with Norwegian farm animals, feeding horses and sheep, and a nature trail. These seasonal offerings make a museum visit a special option for families who want to combine history with outdoor activities.

Three collections are managed at Kunstsilo: the Tangen Collection, Sørlandssamlingen and Christianssands Billedgalleri. Posebyen is part of Kvadraturen and is registered as a distinct cultural heritage area of national interest. Gimle Manor was built around 1800. Paintings, historic furniture and porcelain collections reflect a family home spanning five generations; today, Gimle is a museum of cultural history surrounded by an English-style landscaped park.

The performing arts are also part of the cultural offering: Kilden presents 900 performances, concerts and other events each year in its own halls, as well as on tour in Agder, reaching more than 200,000 audience members. The Odderøya Museum Harbour and the activity building are the starting points for the first steps in a larger museum initiative on Kristiansand’s maritime history.
