Andabeløy – Island Trails, Coast and Culture
Accommodation in Andabeløy
Andabeløy brings together coastal landscape, forest and hiking destinations. The island’s natural features include a large, varied pine forest, glacial potholes and Djupedalsbolten, a boulder wedged in a gorge. The Flekkefjord Landscape Protection Area also extends here: from Andabeløy at the entrance to Flekkefjord, it stretches along the outer part of Hidra and the coast to Åna-Sira, the boundary waterway between Agder and Rogaland.
Getting to Tarmevika and staying there
Ferry route 297 connects Abelnes and Andabeløy; the crossing takes about seven minutes. Check the current timetable before travelling. A Kystled cabin can be rented in Tarmevika; check its booking status separately. A stone bridge with a low step makes access easier there. By the sea, there is a picnic area with a barbecue area, benches and a sheltered section.
Tarmevika is in the island’s archipelago area. The cultural landscape includes places to stay and numerous camping spots; local restrictions may apply. Tarmevika is suitable in westerly winds. If you are planning to stay there, you can experience the coastal landscape and older traces of land use in one place: the old cultivated land features stone settings and remains of old house walls, as well as a cableway to the beach.
Hiking trails to Engelsvannet and Brenøyknuten
Trails lead from the ferry landing towards Nonknuten, Katteraua and Brenøyknuten. The easy Nonknuten–Engelsvannet hike leads from the landing to a viewpoint at an elevation of 152 metres and to Engelsvannet. On this hike, the lake is 1.3 kilometres from the landing. Canoes, pedal boats and a fire pit are listed as options for use at Engelsvannet. If you plan to use them, check in advance whether the equipment is available.
Another destination is Brenøyknuten: the trail follows an old mining track over dry forest ground to the viewpoint and Andabeløy’s 206-metre-high summit. From there, there are unobstructed views of the sea and Lista; vegetation and visibility may affect the panorama. The two hiking destinations differ in the features described: the Nonknuten–Engelsvannet route includes the lake and viewpoint, while Brenøyknuten has the old mining track and summit. Check trail conditions and signage on site.
Culture in the wider Flekkefjord destination
If you would also like to include cultural and railway history when choosing a destination, the wider Flekkefjord destination offers more to explore. The 17-kilometre-long Flekkefjordbanen is a protected cultural monument; rail biking is offered between Flekkefjord and Sira. Check current availability and conditions before making plans. The rail bikes are tandem vehicles for two cyclists; an additional adult or two children can ride along.
The Fedrenes Minne Museum in Rasvåg focuses on the history of Hidra. It presents the story from the Stone Age to the present day through objects and texts. In Flekkefjord itself, Hollenderbyen brings together cobbled streets, flower-adorned wooden houses and colourful street art. StreetART Flekkefjord is an open-air gallery among the wooden houses. These cultural attractions have a different focus from Andabeløy’s natural features and hiking destinations.
Choose the right search area
When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, the mix of experiences you want can help guide your choice: Andabeløy offers the hiking destinations, coastal landscape and traces of older land use described above. The wider Flekkefjord destination expands the options to include railway and museum history, as well as urban culture. This lets you choose your search area based on what matters most for your trip, without treating the two places as a single excursion area.
