Vengsøy: Mountain range, hikes and island beach
Accommodation in Vengsøy
Vengsøya is a rocky island northeast of Kvaløya. A continuous mountain range runs from northwest to southeast across the island, giving the landscape its distinctive character. At 764 m above sea level, Vengsøytinden is the island’s highest mountain. If you’re planning a trip to Vengsøy, you can choose between a challenging ridge hike, a shorter trip to Hundbergtinden, a bike ride and time at the beach.
Hiking between the mountain ridge and summit views
The marked Vengsøy traverse follows much of the mountain ridge. Allow about 5 to 7 hours for the hike. The route has exposed sections and some scrambling—important differences to consider when planning your day and choosing your hike. It’s a good fit for an outing focused on a longer mountain hike; if this kind of terrain isn’t what you’re looking for, the route to Hundbergtinden offers an alternative.
Guided tours on the Vengsøy traverse are limited to a maximum of four customers. If you’re considering a guided tour, this group size helps you assess the offering. It doesn’t change the nature of the hike: the exposed sections and scrambling are still part of the described route on a guided tour.
The route to Hundbergtinden is about 2 km each way and passes through easy terrain. It is considered suitable for families. From the summit, the view extends across the open sea and to the north. This offers a different kind of hike from the Vengsøy traverse: a shorter route with a specific view at its destination, rather than a hike of several hours along the mountain ridge.
For directions to the trailhead: From the ferry terminal on Vengsøya, follow the paved road north for about 1 km. The trail to Hundbergtinden starts at the end of the road.
Island roads, cultural heritage and beach
You can also explore Vengsøya by bike: cyclists can ride all or part of the approximately 7 km paved road through easy terrain. You can choose a section or cover the full stated road distance. When looking for a holiday apartment in Vengsøy, consider whether mountain hikes, a bike ride or a mix of these activities will be the main focus of your stay.
Sandnes on Vengsøya is home to automatically protected cultural heritage sites, including the remains of hut foundations and a burial ground. These traces add a cultural discovery to your experience of the island. If you’re interested in historic places as well as scenery and outdoor activities, you can make Sandnes a focus of your trip.
Rekvika, with its very large beach, lies at the far end of Vengsøya. The afternoon sun shines there for a long time. This offers a different kind of outing from the mountain trails: you can plan your island visit around a long beach break or combine time in Rekvika with an interest in hiking and cycling, without making the activities into a fixed circular route.
Vengsøy Rorbuer is located right on the shore of Vengsøya, with the sea and mountains just beside the accommodation.
