Salangen: Fjord Culture and Experiences
Accommodation in Salangen
At the innermost end of the Sagfjord lies Sjøvegan, a good starting point for discovering Salangen’s culture and range of activities. The region combines exhibitions on coastal culture with hiking trails, river activities and a special annual fishing competition. You can decide whether your trip should focus more on local life and culture, active days outdoors, or a mix of both.
Experience Coastal Culture and History
Lundbrygga is located in the centre of Sjøvegan. The museum features the “Fjord = Ferd” exhibition about coastal culture in the Astafjord. A café, museum shop and tourist information centre are also part of Lundbrygga. If you are interested in life and culture by the fjord, this is a specific highlight to include in your stay in Sjøvegan.
Salangen bygdetun offers a different perspective: it consists of seven buildings relocated from their original sites and has a collection of around 1,500 objects. The farmhouse Limostua, dating from 1870, has an indoor exhibition in every room. The buildings and the collection give your visit a historical perspective and an insight into everyday life. Since these cultural offerings are found in different places and take different forms, you can plan each as a separate discovery during your trip.
Hiking, Rivers and Outdoor Activities
Salangen has 70–90 km of marked hiking trails. The markings follow the Norwegian trail-marking manual. Hiking is therefore an important part of the local leisure offering, and you can choose a specific route to suit your interests. Other options include cycling on marked off-road routes and walking through the caves of Sagelva.
The river also offers various opportunities: river paddling is available in Salangen, and sea eagle safaris are also among the activities on offer. Salangselva is a river system with anadromous fish. You need a fishing licence to fish there. This fishing rule is particularly important if you are planning a fishing day independently of taking part in a competition.
Elvenes Arena is open for outdoor leisure activities. The range of options extends from hiking and cycling to river activities and wildlife watching on a sea eagle safari.
Sjøvegan and Millionfisken
The renovated Sjøvegan sjøfront includes a viewpoint, a breakwater with the “Nisa” shelter, and a new square with a service building for residents and visitors. The viewpoint offers the chance to enjoy the views and spend time together in any weather. A promenade leads from the centre to Elvelund.
A special annual event is Millionfisken. The fishing competition, open to people of all ages, takes place every year in the municipality of Salangen on the first weekend of July. Several thousand visitors come for the occasion, and around 2,000 people take part in the competition’s fishing event. If this event interests you, the first weekend of July is therefore one of the suitable periods to keep in mind when planning your trip.
Getting There and Choosing Accommodation
Road Fv. 851 connects Sjøvegan with the E6 at Brandhaug in Bardu and is 19 km long. Salangen Airport in Elvenes is a non-commercial airport. Plans call for public access to the beach at Elvenes, in the area between the runway and the river. This plan should be distinguished from the existing offerings in Sjøvegan and by the river.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Salangen, you can weigh up different travel interests: cultural discoveries around Sjøvegan, marked trails and off-road routes, or activities by and on the river. If you are particularly interested in Lundbrygga and the sjøfront, you could consider Sjøvegan as a search location; for other priorities, it is worth basing your choice on the activities you have planned. Sjøvegan is a specific place to include in your travel plans for Salangen.
