Kvæfjord: Nature, Culture and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Kvæfjord
Kvæfjord brings together several very different sides: cross-country ski trails in Borkenesmarka, recreation areas by the fjords, cultural and historical sites, and regional food. There are also views of the midnight sun and a rich variety of wildlife. When choosing your holiday apartment, first consider which experiences you want to shape your trip—outdoor activities, culture or insights into regional cuisine.
Cross-country skiing, hiking and activities by the fjord
In Borkenesmarka, Kvæfjordløyper maintains about 38 kilometres of cross-country ski trails. The season usually runs from November to May. If cross-country skiing is important to you, this approximate trail length offers a practical guide for planning your trip; it describes the trail network, not the distance from any accommodation. As another option for days outdoors, Austerfjord is a starting point for mountain hikes to Jonsheimen.
Austerfjordbotn is a state-protected recreation area with facilities for hiking, fishing, swimming and boating. If you enjoy considering different outdoor activities, you’ll find a different range of options here than on the cross-country ski trails. Kvæfjord, Austerfjord and Gullesfjord also offer year-round opportunities for sea fishing. On Kveøya, an easy hike is one of the suggested outdoor excursions. These options can be chosen according to the activity you prefer, without combining them into a single route.
Nupen is a viewpoint in Kvæfjord where you can watch the midnight sun. Together with the opportunities for hiking and fishing, it offers a choice between views, activities on land and experiences at sea. Kvæfjord is also home to a rich variety of birdlife and wildlife, including eagles, seals and otters.
Cultural history and art
Hemmestad Brygge combines the history of a trading post with a preserved complex of buildings. The museum includes an intact old Bryggen building, a shop, and a trading post and post office. Hemmestad Brygge flourished in the 19th century. From Hemmestad, jekts sailed to Bergen twice a year. The maritime setting features exhibitions, and a café is open in summer.
Trastad Samlinger offers insight into the history of special education and the care and protection of people with intellectual disabilities in Northern Norway. An authentic ward area from the institution’s time illustrates part of this history. The collection includes more than 26,000 works by people with intellectual disabilities. Trastad Samlinger is Norway’s only Outsider Art gallery. Visitors interested in art and social history can consider this focus alongside Kvæfjord’s historic trading sites and cultural landscapes.
Kveøya and Storjord also offer different cultural and historical insights. Kveøya is included in the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage’s KULA project for cultural landscapes of national interest. The Storjord cultural landscape includes about 30 cultural heritage sites, which together provide a picture of settlement patterns in the 17th and 18th centuries. The approximate number and centuries mentioned refer to Storjord; KULA refers to Kveøya’s designation.
Regional food and places to discover
Kvæfjord Matkultur is a network of 16 businesses. They produce, sell and distribute a wide range of regional foods, as well as short, local experiences from Kvæfjord and the island realm. Several producers run farm shops selling products from the network. Some offer experiences on their farms; their cafés open before public holidays and during the summer season. Kvæfjord is also known as the home of Norway’s national cake, Kvæfjordkaka. If you’d like to include regional cuisine in your trip, you can consider farm shops, seasonal café offerings and the local speciality as interests in their own right.
Places in the municipality include Borkenes, Bremnes, Refsnes and Gullesfjord. Base your holiday-apartment search on whether you’d like to focus on cross-country skiing, fjord activities, cultural history or regional food.
