Bardu combines striking mountain scenery with opportunities for nature lovers, active days and cultural discoveries. Rohkunborri National Park stretches from the deep gorge in Sørdalen to high mountains with glaciers. There is also a wildlife park, alpine ski slopes and places where you can learn more about the region’s history. Which of these sides of Bardu you want to shape your vacation is a good starting point when choosing your holiday rental.

From the valley to the glaciers

Very different landscapes meet in Rohkunborri National Park: from the deep gorge in Sørdalen, the terrain rises to high mountains with glaciers. The national park is in Bardu and invites you to hike in scenic surroundings. Three access points are listed for orientation: Altevatnet, Sørdalen and Bones. These names give you different starting points for exploring the park; however, they do not describe a specific hiking route. If you are interested in hiking, you can also use Stikk UT!-Bardu. Participation is free and takes place through an app with tour descriptions, maps and GPS tracks. To take part, you create a user account and register your hikes.

Wildlife and outdoor activities

Polar Park in Bardu keeps Nordic predators and hoofed animals in spacious, naturalistic enclosures. This makes wildlife a distinct focus alongside the national park’s mountain and glacier landscapes. The visitor centre for predators in Bardu also focuses on learning and outdoor activities: its grounds include a lavvo, used as an outdoor classroom, as well as various hands-on activities. These include obstacle courses and learning installations about nature and predators. Lasso throwing and activities to identify animal tracks round out the programme. If you are travelling with children, you will find specific topics and activities here that are different from a hike or a day on the ski slopes.

Ski slopes, golf and trails

Steilia Alpinsenter has several slopes and ski lifts. Its varied ski slopes are suitable for both beginners and experienced alpine skiers. Bardu therefore also offers a starting point for travel plans centred on alpine skiing. Another activity is Finnkroken Golfpark, a 9-hole parkland golf course with narrow fairways and varied terrain. When choosing your holiday rental, you can first consider whether you would like to spend most of your time hiking, exploring wildlife and nature, alpine skiing or playing golf.

Another destination is Strømsør Fjellgård. A path leads there from the main road; the walk takes about 30 minutes. You can include this visit as a separate option in your plans, without confusing it with the described access points to the national park.

History and culture in Bardu

Troms Forsvarsmuseum focuses on the military history of Troms, and particularly on the history of the army. Bardu Church offers a different historical connection: it was inaugurated in 1829 as a smaller copy of Tynset Church. Bardu Bygdetun is regularly open during the summer season; group visits are possible outside the season. These destinations complement nature and activity options with different insights into history and local cultural heritage.

When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide on your main focus first: hiking and mountain scenery, wildlife, skiing or culture all lead to different travel plans. If you would also like to explore the place itself alongside its nature and leisure activities, read more about Bardu.
