Brevik combines its coastal setting on the Eidangerfjord with narrow lanes, old wooden houses and a distinctive historic centre. On Øya, also known as Sylterøya, an almost intact group of shipowners’ houses and other wooden buildings has been preserved. At the same time, trails along the fjord and through the hilly Dammane area offer very different experiences. When planning your holiday, you can therefore weigh up whether Brevik’s history, longer walks in the countryside or ferry excursions are of particular interest to you.

Wooden Houses, Harbour and Brevik’s History

Brevik Sentrum and Øya are listed in the NB! Register; their unified cultural environment is of national importance. The narrow lanes between the old wooden houses give the town its distinctive character. The Brevik Town Museum is housed in the former town hall on Øya, whose façade faces the historic harbour. The building is a legally protected historic farmstead with unobstructed views of the harbour to the west and north. Three rooms have been restored to their original style, with authentic period interiors.

The churches, too, tell of different periods of construction in the same location. Brevik’s first church was built on Øya in 1670 as a wooden cruciform church. The present church is the third on this site and was consecrated in 1963. Another way to explore the town’s history is through Cort Adeler: a monument to him stands on Grubbehaugen near Fisketorget, and the Brevik Town Museum has a dedicated exhibition about the naval hero. You can give these two subjects different weight when choosing the cultural interests you want to focus on during your stay.

Art and Maritime Symbols

Those interested in visual art and crafts as well as local history can visit Gruppe 9 Gallery in Brevik. It holds seven to eight exhibitions each year. Krystallhuset offers a different feature: it is made entirely of glass and modelled on a lighthouse. Its shape symbolises Brevik’s maritime ties. Together with the harbour and historic houses, it offers a modern expression of the town’s close relationship with the water.

Coastal Trails and Hilly Countryside

The marked and signposted Kyststien Skjelsvik–Brevik is 7 km long and runs from Skjelsvik boat harbour to the centre of Brevik. There are places to swim along the trail by the Eidangerfjord. The route therefore combines a set distance with coastal scenery and access to the water; if you would rather plan a walk in hilly terrain, Dammane offers a different experience. The area and its surroundings are designated an important landscape conservation area. Marked trails from Dammane continue to the excursion destination Prekestolen and the historic Ole Høiland’s Cave.

Several information boards with explanations and maps of the landscape conservation area and nature reserve help you find your way around Dammane. Parts of the area have been adapted for people with disabilities; however, there is an uphill stretch from the car park. This specific limitation should be taken into account when planning a visit. If you include Kyststien in your day’s plans, you can take a bus back from Brevik or from Skjelsvik/Mule.

Fjord Views and Island Excursions

On Øya, Batteriet is a viewpoint overlooking the fjord, with seating in the landscaped park. For trips on the water, Brevik Fergeselskap operates ferry services from Brevik to Sandøya, Bjørkøya and Siktesøya. A one-hour round trip takes you from Brevik past these three islands and back to Brevik. The ferry service also lets you go ashore on the islands to fish or swim and return later the same day. This gives you the choice of a round trip or a stay on one of the islands.

Choose a Starting Point to Suit Your Interests

If you plan to explore the trails in Dammane, bus M1 goes to the Furulund stop; from there, it is about 240 metres to the trail by Dammane. For Kyststien, a bus stop is just under 300 metres away if you take bus M1 to Heistad. This information can help you factor access to each trail into your plans without treating the two hiking areas as interchangeable. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of the town and countryside experiences described here you want to make the focus of your trip.
