Mountain Landscapes and Cultural Heritage
Parts of Hjartdal lie within the Brattefjell-Vindeggen Landscape Protection Area. It protects unspoilt high-mountain and mountain-forest landscapes, a wild reindeer population, and a rich variety of plant and animal life. The protected area also includes valuable cultural landscapes and cultural monuments. Together with Svartdal, Hjartdal is recognised nationally as a designated cultural landscape of particular value. The Cultural Landscape Centre offers guided tours, lectures and cultural programmes about agricultural cultural landscapes. Groups are welcomed by appointment. The visitor area is located at Holm Landhandel and the nearby Cultural Landscape School. Hjartdal Bygdemylle offers another perspective on life in the mountain villages: During guided tours of the mill, visitors can explore a themed exhibition on the history of farming and grain. Barley flour in different grades of fineness and pearl barley are still produced there.
Traditions and Special Discoveries
Tuddal Bygdetun, an open-air museum in Hjartdal municipality, has 13 traditional farm buildings. The oldest dates from the 17th century. At the Øvre Funner farm, you can visit Funnerfellen, where sheepskins are turned into colourful rugs and decorated with the unique patterns known as “Skinnfellroser”. The traditional art of scythe mowing is also part of local culture. The Scythe-Mowing Festival has been held every summer in Hjartdal since 2000 and includes scythe-mowing competitions.
Regional food and traditional craftsmanship add another dimension to the visitor experience. In July and August, everyone can visit Bjordal Stule, where traditional rømmegrøt, coffee and waffles are served. Following old local traditions, Nordbø Gard og Stule makes cheese, butter, sour cream and prim, and offers demonstrations of cheese and dairy production. These offerings have different focuses: one is centred on a seasonal stop for refreshments, while the other showcases the production and demonstration of traditional foods.
Trails for Hikers and Cyclists
Prestevegen passes through mountain and forest terrain between Fellessetra in Hjartdal and Hogstul in Tuddal. The hike is estimated to take six to eight hours. P markers and around 20 name signs mark the route, and there are several campsites along the way. The length of the hike makes it a day trip in its own right. Sogevegen offers a different way to explore the area: This 25-kilometre cycling route passes through Hjartdal, Svartdal and Flatdal and can be started in Gvammen in Hjartdal. Holm Landhandel is also part of the tourist route. Cultural landscapes, art and storytelling are key features of Sogevegen. You can therefore plan your trip around either a longer hike or a cycling route through several places.
Water, Sauna and Winter
At Egderudfossen, there is a paved bathing area with natural rock pools. The stepped bridge “Myllestigen” offers views and safe access closer to the water. Saga Sauna is in Hjartdal, by the Presteodden rest area, and offers views over Hjartsjåvatnet. In winter, ski trails are groomed around the Kjerringstein Trail.
