Langesund: Coastal Paths, Culture and Skerries

Langesund is a small coastal town on the fjord of the same name. Wooden houses and distinctive stretches of street shape the townscape, alongside an extensive skerry landscape with numerous swimming spots. Coast, nature and history offer different themes for your holiday days here.

Swimming Spots and Coastal Landscape

Steinvika is a public swimming spot with a diving board and swimming ladders. A paved access path leads to one of the beaches. Check the condition of the facilities before visiting, as they may change due to maintenance work.

Centrally located Krogshavn is a publicly accessible recreational area. In addition to green spaces and beaches, it has a sand volleyball court, a parkour park, a barbecue area and a large car park. It is also an important landmark for finding your way along the coastal path: the route south passes Krogshavn, and many hikers choose the area as their starting point.

At the very edge of the sea lies Furustranda, a swimming spot and popular hiking area just a few minutes from the centre. The landscape there includes Cambro-Silurian rocks, lime-rich pine forests and deciduous forests. Several Red List species are also among the area’s distinctive natural features.

Exploring on Foot or by Bike

The coastal path from Langesund to Rognstranda starts in the centre, is 9.8 kilometres long and takes approximately four hours. The route is suitable for adults and children. Check the route description and access conditions before setting out. For a shorter orientation around the area, Krogshavn provides a connection to the coastal path heading south.

The Skjærgårdsruta is a different proposition: this 58-kilometre bike ride runs from Langesund to Kragerø along National Cycle Route 1. The described highlights along the Telemark coast include panoramic views, swimming spots and coastal history. The routes are easy to distinguish by preferred mode of travel and distance: a several-hour coastal walk or a longer cycling route with its own coastal course.

Geology and Maritime History

The Gea Norvegica UNESCO Global Geopark has established an experience centre in the old town hall. There, visitors can learn about the local geology and the area’s World Heritage. The Kystkulturkvartalet includes, among other places, the old town hall, Lensmannsgården, Cudriosgate 3, and buildings and collections belonging to the coastal association. Guided tours take place in several of the buildings.

During the summer season, the quarter offers activities and experiences focused on history, culture and learning. Cudrios gate 3 is part of the Kystkulturkvartalet and presents maritime history along the Bamble coast. Cudrios sjøbod also houses a fishing museum. In the old harbour area, Kystkultursenteret is also part of a coastal culture environment that has developed over several years.

Tangen Fort makes a good side trip from the centre. It is located in a nature reserve and combines wide views of the Skagerrak and the coast with ruins from the Second World War. In the centre, Wrightegaarden has been a concert venue for more than 30 years; the specific programme may change. The summer season also features a varied festival programme, with individual festivals and line-ups subject to change.
