Discover Glåmos
Accommodation in Glåmos
Get to know Glåmos through its varied themes: the listed wooden church and Kuråsfossen 1 power station tell the story of the area, Fjøsakademiet brings culture and music into focus, and nearby nature areas are home to unusual plants and birdlife. When choosing a holiday rental, it is worth considering what you want your trip to focus on: should it be shaped more by architectural and musical history, a seasonal activity or wildlife watching?
Church, power station and cultural farm
Glåmos kirke is a listed wooden church built in the shape of a cross and consecrated in 1926. The wooden building has 300 seats and is occasionally used as a concert venue. Kuråsfossen 1 power station tells another part of the area’s history: it was built by Røros Kobberverk and began operating in 1896. Since 2010, Kuråsfossen I has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Røros Mining Town & the Circumference”. In Glåmos, a sacred wooden building and an industrial-era power station stand side by side as distinct cultural attractions.
Fjøsakademiet adds a distinctive note of its own. This cultural enterprise is based on a 300-year-old farm. Its restored barn, Høylemmen, is used for concerts, among other things, and operates seasonally as a summer café. Together with the church’s occasional use as a concert venue, this provides a tangible connection to music, albeit in different places. The Glåmos Spellmannslag is also part of local music history: it was founded in 1950, the Nyhus family formed its core, and Sven Nyhus was its musical director.
Activities and nature in the surrounding area
Kennel Dølanvollen offers dog sledding from its base in Glåmos. The activity is seasonal and depends on conditions; check current availability before making it a firm part of your travel plans. This makes dog sledding a specific activity to consider, with the season and conditions both playing a role.
Mushrooms are another feature of the area’s natural environment. Larch boletes can be found at Vintervollen. The area around Glåmos sports field has plenty of hedgehog mushrooms; around 30 different mushroom species have been found there. The figure is approximate, while the locations mentioned provide specific reference points for these seasonal nature observations.
Near Glåmos, on the north side of Aursunden, lies the Sakrisodden plant protection area. Siberian aster (Aster sibiricus), Norway’s rarest plant, grows there. The Molinga nature reserve is also nearby, at the northwestern end of Aursunden. It is an important breeding and resting area for birds and, during migration, one of the most species-rich wetlands in the Røros region. Nature here ranges from mushroom finds to protected plants and birdwatching.
Travel by train
Train services from Glåmos station connect to Trondheim, Røros, Hamar and Oslo S. If you plan to use the train to get here or for onward travel, check the timetable before your trip. These connections are a practical factor in your planning; consult the current timetable for departure times.
Culture in the wider Røros destination
The UNESCO World Heritage site “Røros Mining Town and the Circumference” in the wider Røros destination includes the town of Røros and its industrial-rural cultural landscapes, Femundshytta with its smelter and associated area, and the winter transport route. Røros Mining Town is built entirely of wood and is connected to a cultural landscape. At the Pressemuseet Fjeld-Ljom in Røros, newspapers can still be produced in the traditional way, using lead type, printing plates and painstaking manual work. These attractions belong to the wider Røros destination and form a distinct cultural focus.
What would you like your trip to focus on?
When searching for a holiday rental, you can use these differences to guide your priorities: architectural history, music, seasonal activities and wildlife watching each appeal to different interests. If you are travelling with a group, first agree on which of these themes matters most to your shared plans.
